Cognates are words that are close enough in spelling in both languages that you would know what they mean in the language with which you are unfamiliar.
Ex:
acteur = actor
professeur = professor
danseur = dancer
"eur " is the french cognate pattern in this case so if you were told to follow the pattern with the word "programmer"
you would write "programmeur"
