This is a difficult question to answer. I don't think anyone knows for sure. Lots of people over the years have claimed ot be the Mahdi. I have met sufis and various saints who could be him, although none of them ever claimed it. I think that Shiite guy, whatsisname with the bad teeth in Iraq thinks he might be since he named his militia the Mahdi Army.
Muslims have been looking for the advent of the Mahdi since the time of Muhammad. Christians have been doing the same thing even longer, looking for the return of the Messiah. Buddhists look to the Maitreya as the Buddha for the new age, so of course some guy in Africa calls himself the Maitreya and does miracles, or appears to.
My point is that these figures may not actually be real. These prophesies about the return of some great godlike prophet may be just wishful thinking. And anyway, even if one of these did appear, pretty much nobody would accept him/her.
Take Muslim history for instance. There has been no worse fighting than the fighting between Muslim factions, their history is replete with political intrigue, assasination and civil war. The west is no better. Perhaps the Buddhists appear to win some points in that respect until you realize that Genghis Khan's Mongols were Buddhists :)
So that brings us to what I actually do think from the viewpoint of my Universalist Sufi perspective:
I think judgement day is when each of us die.
I think the Messiah/ Maitreya/ Madhi is a human template, a symbolism for the presence of the Divine Beloved within each of us, so in a way the Mahdi is me, and you, and all of us.
When will the Mahdi return?
As soon as you accept that you can be the Guided One.

None knows for sure...the appearance of Imam Mahdi.
But he has to appear as sure as return of Jesus is mentioned.
There are certain bearings that have been foretold about his return and certainly it will be thus, but the exact time frame is not known.
One more thing about him is that he will not know and neither claim that he is Imam Mahdi. So it is, for those, who claim to be him,all they are jokers. e must not make a mockery of all this if we are believers.
And for those Atheists who make fun, out of all this, may I ask why most of you remember God when you are near you end.
Me being a non -Christian, but a believer of One God, do believe in the return of Christ and Imam Mahdi, but when that is going to happen none knows.
