Calling the right hand seat "the shotgun seat" goes back to the stage coach and Wells Fargo. The driver of the stage coach and of wagons always sat on the left side. (as we do now) So the guard with his shotgun or rifle would sit on the right side of the seat.
To answer your question there was no more seats on a stage coach just the one up front that carried the two men. Not until we invented automobiles did we have a back seat next to the driver in our vehicles, although there were coaches that had passenger seats. But the drivers of the coach were alone up front. So no back seat.
PS I was not born when the first stage coaches were being used no matter what my kids say.

The back seat behind the passenger is called Cobain, after Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Im pretty sure its called Cobain because as you may, or may not know, Cobain killed himself with a shotgun. So since shotgun is the front seat, and Cobain was behind the shotgun when he commited suicide, the seat behind shotgun is called Cobain.

The back seat behind the driver is the "back seat driver", the middle back seat is "b**ch", and the passenger side back seat is "back seat shotgun". Calling "Rifle" (much like "Shotgun") entitles you to either of the window seats in the back.

At least, that's how I know it. A bit repetitive and unoriginal, I know, but I didn't come up with it!

Not B**ch, this covers the two outside seats leaving the B word to hold down the hump.

Actually as ArmySarge stated the term refers to the old stagecoach days. I just call it the back seat & has no nickname...
