I don't understand how Christians can think humanity is in such a rotten place, when you consider how much progress we've made: People live longer than ever before, we have better food, shelter, etc, all because of human invention. We build dams and siesmographs and lightening rods to protect us from the wrath of God. Basically everything enjoyable in your life, including people, plants and animals, have been altered in some positive way by humanity.
I've read projections that in 50 years, the GDP in Africa will likely rise to the level enjoyed by western countries today. So, given all that we've accomplished, esp considering the crappy start, how about giving humanity a little credit, Christians?!

I know some people will disagree and talk about how our progress has negative consequences and so on, and how we still have a lot of work to do, but compare all the progress we've made with where we started out (after the fall, if you like) and I don't think we're doing so bad!

jeesh, I'm not a troll... get a grip. I addressed the Christians because as far as I know, they're the only ones who talk all the time about how human beings have fallen... but if anybody else wants to answer, they are welcome to.
I'm sorry if my question extolling the oft forgotten virtues of humanity offends you.
Human beings made the plants, animals, and themselves through sexual and artificial selection.

Good points, blessing seeker- I guess comparing humanity to where we were after the "fall",human quality of life seems to be going up, and up for the average human. Yeah, things aren't good for everyone, and I don't think they ever will be, but for the average guy, they're undoubtably the best they've ever been... don't you think?

Tomato your idea of progress and mine differ greatly. All of the inventions of man does not save his soul.
There is nothing new under the sun.

In Islam we believe that man was sent on earth to complete its existence, the worlds reason de etra was that it should be lived upon.
If God wants to get you, don't worry you'll get it, no planning or no safety system will help you, seriously. Anyway there is nothing that can protect anyone from death, thats everyones last call.
The GDP in Africa isn't allowed to be increased due the fact organizations such as the European union subsides their own farmers and then sent this cheap crop to other countries. This destroys local economy and makes them reliant on handouts.
The real mess of the world is due to man and he should really think about what sort of world we are going to leave out kids in.

The last century was allegedly the most violent ever, and this at the time when we had more knowledge and know-how than ever before:
Genocides - Armenian, Jewish, Rwandan, Cambodia
Horrendous wars - 2 world wars, many Cold War conflicts
I think it was just the prayers of the Church, I think, that prevented nuclear war between US and the Soviets (Cuban missile crisis, 1963 I think). We'd all be nuked if that had happened, and they nearly did it.
------
We don't seem better this century:
911 and over-heavy US response
Darfur - Arab nations can't be bothered to help non-Arab moslems, Western nations don't do anything as we'd probably get accused (unfairly) of attacking muslims.
Greenhouse problem - loads of words, but no real action. We all want our pleasant lifestyles.
-----
Addition (in response to your comment):
We certainly (in the "West" at least) have a higher standard of living than ever before, with better health provision, more interesting work and leisure opportunities. One of my ancestors died as a young lady, as the work of pounding bread in a bakers damaged her heart, another died in her 30s due to a burst appendix ... we are having it a lot easier than the mass of people in the 19C (thank you, Pasteur etc).

When you undeerstand that we are now living in a sinful world and not the one that Our Creator made for us. We could of had it much better. The world that we enjoy now is nothing but "Toaster Leavins". As for living longer, what are you comparing this to? 200 yrs ago? 6,000 yrs ago, mankind lived to be a thousand. Many cultures tell of a Golden Age when man lived to be 1,000 yrs old. Yeah, we would all like to think that what we have is better than long ago, but the truth of the matter is that we are still living in a fallen world.

You can't sell a product until you've made the consumer believe that a problem exists.
Religious conservatism is based off the false premise that the world was better before, it's bad now, and by following certain rules we can get it back to how it was before. The bottom line is that life never looked like "Leave it to Beaver".

Humans are still naturally selfish, self-centered, and egotistical. Things have gotten worse in recent decades. Licentiousness isn't progress, it's evil. People need to start turning back to God and start living in His Spirit of truth and righteousness, not after their own self-created moral values.

Better food? why are there so many fat people? Why are there so many hungry people. Shelter? Why are there so many homeless people? People, plants and animals are God's design. Siesmograpphs & lightning rods I can give humans credit for and they do a lot to keep us safe. And why do you just address the Christians? Troll.

Bravo....so many fundies are all gloom and doom...we have much to be thankful for...and this world is a blessing from God....
I see so much good in people...people doing kind things for others....people helping others through food banks, charities, etc...both of time and of money.....
Fundies get so blinded by their own hate, that they end up with their sites set on bad people, and not on good or on God....it is sad.
