This boy who had a crush on me in the 7th grade gave me a landscape oil painting which he painted with his own little hands! One of the fondest memories of my life.
So give her a homemade gift. Girls swoon over stuff like that. Well, at least the ones who aren't superficial little skanks.
Jeffrey K's suggestion is pretty good too

If you're afraid to be embarassed, then don't ever ever ask a girl out. At some point in your life, probably several points, you will be embarassed, by stupid things like falling down or saying the wrong thing. Most of the things that will embarass you are things you can't control, and therefore are things you actually shouldn't be embarassed by. In other words, just tell her. The worst that will happen is she won't feel the same, and you'll be sad for a while. But if you're afraid to be embarassed, you'll never succeed in a relationship, let alone in getting one.

You could ask her to help you with some homework (even if you don't need the help). Ask her to meet you at the library or your favorite hangout or at your house.
After she has done a little homework with you, tell her that she is a good friend. Then say that you like her even more than as a friend. She will either say that she likes you too or else she will say that you are just a friend.
Give it a try. If you don't say anything to her, you will never know if she wanted to be your girlfriend.

If you don't take the risk, you will not learn that you always have choices and options. Embarrassment is an emotional spellcheck. Remember that.
If you behave in such a way that you do not offend, you do not insult or belittle, and you remain polite, and sensitive to your feelings and hers, you have minimal reason to be embarrassed.
Leave a nice card for her. find her address and mail it to her. Tell her she impresses you, that you think she is smart and that you would like to discuss a class issue/subject/paper with her over a cup of coffee.
Be confident in who you are, and honor your feelings
good luck

Just be honest, and don't worry about embarrassment. Say simply, using your own words of course, "I really like you, and want to know how you feel about that?" .Hopefully she'll be honest, and you will know where you stand. Whether you can try and go to the next level in your relationship, or if you will just remain friends.

as you walk along or sit or right in the middle of something normal . . . just say, "I like you"
that won't be the end of the "talk"
just listen and react, and be yourself. just look down at the ground, and shuffle you feet and say, "gosh this is hard to say" . . . and bumble your way through it! stutter and stammer and you'll get there!
that is what we all did . . .

Ultimately, there is a lot of risk to love.
However, why don't you invite her to go do something? ... you don't have to get into WHY you want to. If she's clever, she'll begin to put 2 and 2 together.
Start easy - and see what happens.

Well you just have to not worry about being embarrassed. It usually only happens when you have no idea it might.

First make sure that she likes you back like that because if she doesn't it'll just end in pain for both of you. But if she does don't pressure, be nice, and it'll probably work out.
