3 months ago a neighbor asked me to watch his female pit bull for a weekend (knowing I have 1 myself) and that Monday I realized he had moved. I've housed her and fed her and LOVED her. However, I don't have the time, energy or funds to maintain two dogs. I don't want to turn her over to the pound and I've made a few calls and there is no local rescue center for Pit bulls in my area (20109- VA). Can anyone give me some guidance?

Still call the Pit bull rescues they will come and get them. they would rather save good dogs right away then let them die in a shelter. There are nation wide Pitt rescues that will be more than happy to take her off your hands. Rescue places is the best way to go to make sure she ends up in good hands. try finding no kill shelters.

Email a national pit bull rescue, tell them you will foster her if they will post on petfinder for you. They might require paper work and an adoption fee to be payed by the adopter and sent to them. You can also try the same thing with your state Human Society. The thing is this way you know that the people looking from a rescue org are serious and know a little about the breed to Begin with.

Check with other rescues in your area. A lot of times people are involved with rescues but don't necessarily advertise that on the web.

You can try to home her yourself by having a process for adoption. Visit with potential owners, go to their homes to check them out and make sure that they can maintain a high energy dog that needs lots of play time. And most importantly, take time to get to know them. Make sure that they are savory people.

This will be a process, I'm sure, but its worth it considering the breed. I love pits and they hold a very special place in my heart. All the more reason I hope that you are careful to whom you home her with.

Its awesome what you're doing and shame on the owner for just dumping their dog. At least they found someone that will take care of her.

I would contact various pit rescues anyways, some of them may be willing to list your dog on their websites, at the very least they should be able to give you advice and guidance on finding a good home for the dog.

Well, I think that the only thing you can do is give it to a pound. If you can find another person in your neighborhood that wants it, you can keep track of it while not taking care of it. If you really can't take care of it, you could also try contacting the neighbor that gave you the dog in the first place(although I doubt that he still wants it, since he gave it to you in the first place).

you can put an ad in the paper and stuff, that way you can make sure she finds a good home and you can take care of her until then
