I am 21/f and moving to NYC in January. I am currently living in PA and I have been planning this move and saving up my money for a while. I will be attending school at LIU and working on my 2nd bachelors.
Anyway, I am looking for apartments right now online and I am planning on looking at them sometiem in October. I am confused about the areas of NY and I'm not sure which are the safest or most convenient. Could you give me any tips?
In Manhattan.....I want to be close to 34th street....so which area is that?
Here are some choices....
Battery Park
Chelsea
Chinatown / Little Italy
Downtown
East Harlem
East Village
Financial District
Flatiron
Gramercy
Greenwich Village
Harlem / Morningside
Inwood / Wash Hts
Lower East Side
Midtown
Midtown East
Midtown West
Murray Hill
Nolita / Bowery
SoHo
TriBeCa
Union Square
Upper East Side
Upper West Side
West Village
Queens - not sure of areas
Long/Staten Island
Any tips or advice?

I am going to C.W. Post campus, I can pay around $1500 a month. I can take a car or leave it behind...doesn't really matter. I am looking more for a convenient location that is safe as well.

I don't know how much of a budget you're working with, but a lot of those places you listed are quite expensive. In fact, most every place in Manhattan is pretty expensive these days, the least expensive parts being Inwood, but that is quite far from 34th st. Which LIU campus will you be attending? That should factor into your decision-making as well.
Brooklyn is definitely much more affordable than Manhattan and if you're attending the Brooklyn campus of LIU, then you could probably find something pretty affordable in that area. Just remember that Manhattan is a farily large place, and these neighborhoods aren't that close together.

For Queens, look in Astoria, that's the closest to the city. It's pretty affordable and the area is nice.
Staten Island is pretty far and you need a car. The only way to the city is by ferry or by bus.
Tribeca boasts some of the most expensive rents, even more than the upper west and the upper east side.
If you want to be close to 34th St, try the Murray Hill area or the Clinton area (which used to be called Hell's Kitchen). Both are very close and have a lot of shops and restaurants.

Look for an apartment in Glen Cove, Long Island. It's about 10 miles from the C.W. Post Campus. As far as best places to live, without a doubt Fifth Avenue on the upper East Side. That's where a good chunk of the world's money is located. Believe me, when I tell you there are apartments on Fifth Avenue that go for $30 million and have more than 15 rooms.

NYC is still quite dangerous and $900 will get you NOTHING in the area. I suggest moving to Stamford, CT (Uconn is there) because there is a but that will take you straight into NYC along the Interstate. If you can take a 2hr commute each day, you'll save over $400/mo by living in CT. Also the taxes (perhaps) are lower than NYC.

Neighorhood boundaries in Manhattan change depending on who you ask. If I was you I wouldn't bother looking in Manhattan anyway as it is very expensive. Check out Astoria and Sunnyside in Queens, they are both a short subway ride to 34th street, are safe, and have affordable rents. Williamsburg and Greenpoint in Brooklyn are pretty convenient but are way overpriced and filled with trendy pretensious idiots. Long Island and Staten Island are not really convenient at all. You could also check out Hoboken and Jersey City NJ, 15 minutes or so to 33rd street, and affordable also. Even though NJ is a different state there is no real difference between those areas and Queens/Brooklyn.

The CW Post Campus of LIU is in Brookville, in Nassau County.
I don't think living in Manhattan and commuting to LI is feasible w/o a car. Keeping a car in Manhattan is an expensive proposition. You are looking at $500 min for the car. Look on LI.

chelsea and greenwich are my favorites, but very very expensive. i have a friend who used to live on the upper west side, and she liked it just fine. i know a lot of people who live in queens or brooklyn and commute because it's much cheaper. manhattan would be ideal, though. it depends on how much money you have saved up, how many roommates you have, and whether you'll be working. living in manhattan is nooooot cheap. good luck, i'm jealous!
