Are you pretty much going in the direction in your life that was pretty much predetermined for you, by fate, or culture?

With me, it is of my own direction. I didn't follow my parents beliefs. But that is what America is about. You don't have to follow your families predetermined path. You can make your own path if you want to. In other countries, it's not so easy.

I broke away from my cultural expectations. My mother fully expected me to become a priest. My whole family, which is 100% Italian Catholic, pretty much expected me to enter the priesthood. But I didn't. Instead, I'm going into teaching. Had my mother lived to see this, she would doubtless be horrified, but I felt more aptitude toward teaching than toward being a parish priest.
