There are two ways that help me. One way is to take a mouthful of water and then bend your head way down forward, (upside down) and swallow the water. Another way is to first open your mouth very wide and stick your tongue out as far as it will go. Hold it that way for about 30 seconds. Hold it long enough to break the hiccup cycle.

These are the remedies I was taught.:
1. Drinking water, bent over from the opposite side of the glass.
2. Taking a teaspoon full of sugar.
3. Taking a drink of an especially fizzy soda like plain carbonated water or Sprite and swishing it around in your mouth.
4. Holding your breath for 30 seconds.
I usually use the "hold your breath method" If you can inhale and hold it real tight and get to 30 seconds without a hiccup during this, you should be home free. You have to take a new breath and start over if you hiccup before you count to 30. You might have to repeat it several times to get to 30. This always works for my and I get the hiccups a lot.

While drinking water try to time the hiccup and swallow air and water at the same time. It may be difficult to do all that at once but it works for me.

I just will myself to stop. If I start hiccuping, I just kind of mentally tell myself "I'm not going to hiccup anymore." Then I just...stop.
It might be a family trait of mine because everyone in my bloodline can do that. But it's worth mentioning.

A spoonful of sugar - just let it dissolve on your tongue. Sometimes you have to do it twice but it always has worked for me.
Once when my daughter had hiccups, I interrogated her "So, your teacher called me today. Do you want to tell Daddy why the teacher would need to call me? (gulp) Any explanation? (silence) How are the hiccups?" They were gone.

hiccups are a result of spasms of the diaphragm, the best way to be rid of them is to consciously relax your diaphragm, and breathe slowly for a minute or two.
