The places aren't as ridiculous as the idea that people actually get to go there when they die.

Hell certainly is I mean keep someone alive just to torture them forever. What a terrible idea. Who would think of somehting like that to discredit God? I know SAtan.
But heaven is a very reasonable concept that their are creatures out there in space different from us and living in a whole new planet, world or universe?
But that the earth was made for humans and it is our home seems reasonalble. That some may be taken up as spirit persons who know what it is like to live here and be a person that sounds reasonable. That the wicked are destroyed and the good get to live forever on the earth seems reasonable to.
Psalms 37:9,10,11,29 Matthew 5:5

Yes and no. As fundamental concepts, no...heaven is simply the "place" God lives and hell is the alternative. The existence of opposing forces is a given in science, nature, philosophy, and more. For "good" to exist, you must also have "bad" or "evil", for "right" to exist, you must have "wrong", Newton's 3rd law...whatever you want to call it, if there is an afterlife created by the same God that created this life, it makes sense to think that opposing forces could/would also exist in that afterlife. Heaven is simply eternal life in fellowship with that God and hell is separation from him.

Yes, I do think many of the "perceptions" of what "heaven" and "hell" will be like are pretty ridiculous. Too many people think they can perceive and define something that their own God tells them is beyond human understanding or imagination. Vivid images of heaven and of hell are often spread around as if they are facts when they are, by God's own definition, beyond our comprehension...thus, anything people can comprehend (and thus communicate) about what either place is like can't possibly be an accurate representation of reality!

For me it is quite simple...God promises that if I trust him and seek to follow his instructions that I'll spend eternity with him and that eternity with him is better than eternity without him. I don't bother trying to understand or explain what either will actually be like and I find it highly ridiculous, even hilarious, when people try to tell someone else what either place would be like!

Yes, if there is a "heaven" or "hell", those things are on earth right now. However, the modern notions of heaven and hell are so wrapped up with the visions of artists and writers, most people wouldn't even know those are not from the bible (ie the devil as being red with horns and pitchfork, etc)

The most ridiculous part is that intelligent, rational adults are supposed to buy into the hoopla that there is a big daddy figure in heaven who will spank you if you do wrong and might, if he feels like it, reward you if you do right. And at the end of it all there is a report card and your life will be graded.

Bleh...

Not as ridiculous as "original sin" or in fact "sin". Heaven and hell are logical destinations only if there is a final judgment of the soul after death.

Believers (chiefly Muslims and Christians) like to reserve hell in their conversations for people who don't believe as they do. I think it's the same as saying, "John and Jane are going to lose their home and declare bankruptcy one day, because they're vegetarians and I'm not".

I would start with God as the most ridiculous part, followed by heaven, hell, salvation, absolution of sin, and everything else.

I think the part about living your life a certain way or you are not worthy is the most ridiculous part. I guess if you don't live that certain way one of the "consequences" could be hell...so it could tie into being the most ridiculous part.

Well it's ONE of the more ridiculous concepts to come from a religion, even if it's far from being universal among religions.

What I find ridiculous in general is this near-universal idea that masochism and self-loathing leads to "higher states of awareness". And similarly, they tell you that it's in your best interest that you don't act on your best interest.

The hate and the judgment are the most ridiculous part of religion to me.

They are the cornerstone of religious belief.

The carrot of everlasting life.

The stick of eternal torment.

For all those who would be swayed by Pascal's wager - pick the religion with the worst hell and the best heaven.
