It all depends on how they were hired by the non profit and their arrangement with the non profit

Most are simply salaried employees whose job in the organization is to look for grants

Others are part timers who write for non profits and paid on a part time salary with no benefits

Others are paid by commission basis based on the grants that they get for the organization

It all depends on how the non profit are hiring grant writers

If they work for the nonprofit organization, they get paid salary and benefits. The salary is dependent on the size of the organization and the amount of proposals expected to be submitted. If they work freelance, it is usually at an hourly rate.
