Hi
I'm 17 years old and run around 4 miles a day (28 miles a week) Is this what most runners would consider a pretty healthy workout?
PS
I feel great when I do this.

Actually at your age, it's excellent, but most runners I know run about 1 1/2 to 2 times further.

There's nothing wrong with 4 miles a day. It's much better than nothing, and will have you craving a 6-8 mile route each day.

One way to jump start and stay on course is to do road races every now and then (not that I love being beaten by younger folks).

Sounds like you've got the bug...just keep going!

As you can tell from the responses you got, YOu've got a great plan, and as long as you are happy with it, it provides a great deal of health and safety features. So I don't recommend changing a great plan !!!

But just for fun, I'll tell you what could be options depending on your own personal goals:

1. Take a day off each week to rest and recover
2. If you want to change, you have plenty of options. If not, that's okay too.
3. 1 option is to add the 4 miles to other days to free up the day of rest. 4 runs of 4 miles, 2 runs of 6 miles. You could easily do this and do the same weekly mileage.
4. Another option is to add a day of speedwork for change of pace. substitute 1 of your 4 mile days at the track doing 10x100s. Run the straights, recover on the turns. This would increase your speed capability should you decide to use it.

Just don't make quick wholesale changes immediately. Make 1 small change at a time. Good Luck

You are running enough to develop your cardiovascular system. If you are running 7 days per week, you should take one day off for rest and recovery. Depending on what type of runner you are that can be okay or not very much. Marathon runners will run more than 10 miles a day and do a long run once a week or once every other week. You might want to consider running different distances on different days. You could run 5 miles without any trouble and could do so once or twice a week. You should also look at running different speeds. Once a week you could do a tempo run where you are running at a higher percentage of maximum speed. If you run the same distance at the same effort everyday your body becomes conditioned to that and you are not improving. What you do depends on your goals for running.

First off, congrats on willingly running 4 miles every day of the week! What is really great is that you feel fit and unstressed during your runs. This indicates that your body is healthy and capable of so much more.
If you are able to run 4 miles, you can definitely upgrade to some longer runs. You may feel uncertain at first about running 7 miles, but long runs will strengthen and build up your endurance. Mix it up every other day, doing some 4mi runs and an occasional 5-6mi run. Also, make sure you take a day off once a week--rest is just as important as the running in order to STAY healthy. Glad that you're having fun running, keep it up. :)

If your goal is a healthy workout, it is great.

The one change I would make would be to take one day off a week and to up the mileage on one run to something more like 6 miles. The day off gives your body a chance to rest and recover, that is very important. The longer run helps with your endurance which will help your overall fitness.

But, like I said, for a general workout, that is great. If you decide you want to train for a race, even a marathon, you already have a solid base to start off on.

the distance is perfect for the amount or frequency of running that you do. some runners, me included, only run 3-4 times a week but log between 30-35 miles. this is done thru 2-3 short run days and one long run day. my only suggestion is skip one day of running to give your body time to rest and heal.

yes thats great. i ran LOTS when i was younger. i would suggest doing one long slow day - that is go lots farther than you are used to, but do it more slowly. also, give your self 1 or 2 days off in the week - but not two days in a row........

Peace+
