No real problems when visiting France. Many insurers restrict UK drivers to be over 24 years of age ... check with your insurer.
What do you need ....
1.UK driving licence - the pink variety. The old green licence is valid but if going in to Spain an International Driving Permit translation is handy [AA available]. Also for Spain a bail bond issued by your car insurer ... many will state the availability on your policy.
2.Valid motor insurance ... must be fully comprehensive. UK 3rd Party insurance is not accepted in Europe.
3. Valid UK road fund licence. Renew prior to departure if it expires whilst in France
4. MOT if car is 3yrs and older. Renew prior to departure if it expires whilst in France.
5. Two warning triangles, Ist Aid box, high visibility yellow jacket [cheap from £1 shops], headlight deflectors [only for night driving] and a full set of spare set of light bulbs.
6. Be prepared for 'on the spot' fines if you exceed the speed limits etc.
7. Dont drink and drive .... max limit is half of UK alcohol limit.

With regards to Johns reply about things have changed quite dramatically since he started to drive in europe.
As well as the obvious requirements car, licence ect., you are covered third party only legally without extending your own insurance even if you are comp in the UK driving abroad.
Check your insurance policy, if driving abroad is included then you have the same cover as here in the UK as what your policy states.
If driving abroad is not covered on your policy you may have to pay a small fee usually about £15.25 per 7 day intervals. This will cover you for any cover you have above the third party cover.
If you have third party only you are legal and will not have to pay anthing but again if your policy does not state be covered abroad you may just have to inform your insurance where you are going so they can note it.
The best one to ask is your insurance as they all do vary as per all the replies vary.

Insurance for abroad, if you are going to drive at night, you need to get headlight deflectors, also a warning triangle to carry in the boot, contact the AA or RAC for more help.

You didn't say whether you currently have a license, or if you're just visiting (and from where) or moving, permanently.
Regardless, check out the following link.
