My boyfriend graduated as an Animal Vet major w/ a 3.35 GPA. He has lots of volunteer hours and extra curricular's...I think he has a little bit of leadership experience. He hasn't had a job in 3 years, so he cannot get a letter of recommendation from an employer. All together, he is afraid of being underqualified. Should he be searching for another job in the meantime?

Please don't answer unless you are in the Navy or your close to someone in the Navy.

HE IS NOT TRYING TO BECOME A VET IN THE NAVY. His degree is a cross between bio and chem, and it's a precurser for anything in health sciences or any other particular science. He is co-published in forensics medicine.

yes he should,, if he was planning to join the navy while he was in collge he should have changed his major if he is planning to stay and retire from the navy but if he is not planning to stay enlisted for more then 6 years yes i highly suggest to him to find a job that fits his major from college, because the only job for him in thre navy that i could think of would be a coreman (, corpsman ) LOOK FOR A JOB REGARDLESS IN CASE YOU CANNOT JOIN FOR ANY REASON GIVEN !!!

Yes, he should be looking at all of his available options, especially as the Navy has only a very few positions for veterinarians, and that degree doesn't really translate into any other skills that the Navy is normally looking for.

That being said, if he wants to become a Naval Officer, he should also do a bit more research and may need to take a few more classes to give himself the best possible chance to be selected.

Has he spoken to Officers currently serving? Did he have a minor in something else? Almost any kind of engineering is always in demand, and chemistry or biology might help as well.

Finally, has he looked at any of the other services? Being an old Sailor myself, I agree that the Navy is certainly to be preferred whenever possible, but we probably have less need for veterinarians than any of the other branches.

the Navy doesn't have Veterinarians, only the Army does. Frankly, his degree is not competitive for a slot in OCS. If he wants to be a Vet, have him look at the Army. he'd have a better shot.

his lack of other qualifications(most especially work experience) will hurt his chances as well.

the Navy picks up only a few Intell and Supply types each year. SWOs are always in demand, and if he can smoke his interview he may have a shot.
