How long does it take to get released from the military after medical discharge has been ordered? I have heard a month or so, and I have also heard a few months. Are there any situations that might make it take longer than "ususal"? My fiance was told by his doctor yesterday that he should be released on medical discharge due to a perminate injury to his ankle. How long should all of this take?

It is a case by case situation and depends on where he is stationed. It took mine over a year 1/2 to go through before they gave me a decision. When the naval officer (I was in the Corps but you know everything goes through the Navy) contacted me they gave me the option to appeal or accept the decision. I had so much time to do that. After I accepted my Medical Retirement I asked to be able to go on terminal leave just so that I could stay in longer to use up my leave days and collect my military paycheck for another 2 months. Also so that I could burn up my leave down to 60 days so that I could sell the rest back. I knew that I was going to get discharged but with them taking so long to do it I was able to go over 6 years in so that I could be retired instead of just discharged. Make sure he goes to VA when he gets out so that he can collect that lifetime paycheck also.

Those screws are placed to prevent/restrict rotation while the fracture heals. Once the bone heals, then they are not needed. Why not get the screws out and continue your service?? If the screws are on the outside, or side of your femur they could possibly cause irritation of the iliotibial band. There also are good stretches for the IT band that you could learn how to do. If you are looking for an entitlement, via medical discharge, I would recommend you reconsider.

They will process his paperwork. Then he will have to check out of his unit at the battalion, regimental, and division level.

Once all the paperwork is completed they will more than likely send him "home awaiting orders." All that means is that he is still considered active duty until his discharge runs out but he gets to go home.

It took about 3 months for me.
