I've never owned a cat before. I've always had dogs. I got this cat as a 6 week old kitten. He's a Siamese. After he uses the litter box he washes his paws off in the dogs water bowls. Often at night he washes them in my glass of water that I leave by my bedside. I thought cats didn't like water.

He does more than just dip his paws in. He sits in the bowl. Sometimes he'll curl himself in the water bowl. I'm not sure how much the dogs like it. He won't use a small bowl. It has to be a big bowl like the ones we have for the dogs.

Hi.I've recently got myself two siamese kittens. I've never heard of a cat washing his paws in a water bowl but this may be because his paws are covered in litter and he discovered that when he puts his paws in water, they become clean! Siamese cats are just smart like that :)
If you want him not to do this, I would suggest that you buy a mat thats purpose is to clean your cats paws after using the litter box. Then, there will be no point of dipping in the water bowls because his paws are clean! You can find them at your local pet store. Make sure they are made for cats litter boxes or else there will be no point of buying it.
As for cats not liking water, well they love drinking water obviously. But, bathing in it isa whole different story. A lot of cats I know hate water, that includes being sprayed with a spray bottle, being bathed, and stepping in a bowl of water. My cats however, pretty much don't even notice when I spray them with a water bottle. I know thats kinda weird because everyone always tells you that if cats do something bad spray them with a water bottle because they hate it. Not for my cats! But, maybe some cats are just freaked out because its kinda when someone sas "boo" and you don't even expect it, the just didn't know it was going to happen. But if your cat knows its purposely putting its hand in water, they probably won't be as scared!
Well, I hope this helps and your kitten won't step in your water anymore!

I have had cats my whole life and until this year when I got a new kitten I had never had a cat that sticks their paw in the water bowl. My kitten doesn't do it after using the litter box though, he does it after eating.

Well, I haven't noticed my cat "dipping" after a litter visit, but I have seen her do this on many occasions and then lick her paws to get the water. Sometimes she really makes a mess, and she uses the dog's water bowl, not her own.
O read somewhere that cas don't like to get their whiskers wet, so it may be that my cat exhibits this behavior when the bowl is relatively low and she can't see the surface very well.
Some cats *do* like water. Mine likes to play in the sink. I set the water to trickle slowly and she swipes her paw through it, sticks her head in it, walks through it. It's kind of comical to watch.

Some cats don't mind water, it's not all that uncommon. Both of my cats will stick their paws into water( or any glass they happen to see sitting on a side table in my living room) , and one even loves to play in the shower, gets soaking wet, then will just lay in there all day even when there is no water.... (I think he might like the tub itself more than the water thing)

It's not to weird I've got two cats and the one named Bubba Loved water when he was a kitten in the water bowl he would splash his paws in it so it's kind of usual, and possible the reason he is getting in your cup of water is because he's thirtsy or he just wants to play in water. Kittens are Kittens.

this is pretty normal behavior and from what i understand Siamese cats are very mischievous. My cat will dip her paws in water, i had a cat once that would come in the shower with me, so this is myth cats not liking water. Don't believe everything that you read or hear. good luck with your Kitty.

not all cats hate water my cat didn't start doing that til he got older the best advice i can give you is keep a bowl of water by his or her litter box so your cat doesn't do it to every bowl or cup of water around the house look at it in the bright side at least your cat isn't dirty

That is so-o-o-o-o sweet! They're funny with their little personalities. I'd just enjoy him, if I were you. (I bet the dog's not so much on the handwashing, huh?) You might try putting a sturdy water bowl by his litter box and watching him a few times. As soon as he's pottied, take him right to the bowl and see if he can learn to associate that particular bowl with handwashing.....
