Normally I would say no, but a couple years ago we were booked to go away and my dad got taken into hospital for an emergency operation.
His doctor signed him off for two weeks to recover, but he was feeling fine, and since my mum is a nurse we decided to go on holiday anyway.
His work was fine with it, they even took the two weeks as sick leave, so he got his holiday days back to take again!

I think it just depends on the company, if it comes to it I suppose you could just go and tell your boss you cancel the holiday and spent the time in bed! lol!

Depends on your circumstances, but generally the answer is no. There are a couple of different situations where it is tolerable, though.

First, if you have flexible time off, where sick leave and vacation come out of the same bunch of hours.

Second, if you are taking sick leave to care for a family member who is sick in a foreign country. I once had to take a week's sick leave to care for my daughter, who had gotten appendicitis while on a scout trip to Europe. She had surgery in Munich and I went over to take care of her.

Talk with your employer - you should do it above board if you do.

Well, if you have a note from the doctor saying you are not yet allowed to return to work, but you CAN go sit on the beach, you might get away with it. But if you are out partying and run into the boss, that COULD be a problem!

If you are not sick you are not supposed to be on sick leave. If you are really sick and the Doctor advises for change of weather you probably can go. If you really care for the job, better check with your employer before you go.

i asked this question a few months back because my sister wanted to take me to Spain to convalesce,i have been off work 8 months with serious back problems ...none of the answers i was given knew for sure so i phoned my boss who said whilst i could holiday in my own country it was OK but shouldn't go out of the country because of getting sick pay from the government but suggested i got in touch with the relevant people who payed my sickness money, which i did they said i could go but i would have to forfeit my sickness pay for those two weeks ...so you can go down this route or go and hope you don't get caught ...but would it be worth the worry of them finding out .....i went in the end and enjoyed it and did me world of good ..hope this helps

Well nobody will know unless you tell them. If any of your work colleagues are going on holiday make sure you go to a different place! I'm talking from experience!

Just don't get caught!!! It will most likely be OK with the company because they pay your wages anyway but if you are receiving government support then that is a definite NO.
