It's called a stitch, it happens when you exercise and the muscles need oxygen. To get less stitches, you need to get fitter.

A lot of people think that its the stomach cramping up on them, but it's actually the "obliques." Notice that when you run, your hips sway back and forth and you'll notice that you sort of rotate back and forth from your waist, especially if you swing your arms a lot. The left side under your ribs is exactly where the left oblique is located.

What you want to do to help with the pain is to stretch and follow R.I.C.E (Rest, ice, compression, elevation). Its probably best to avoid elevation, since I have no idea how you would do that, but stretch the muscle and follow the other three.

To avoid pain in the future, workout this muscle group. If you go to the gym, there should be a machine that swivels on a rotating pivot, and that allows you to rotate and workout your obliques. If you don't know what I'm talking about, or dont know any workouts for this muscle, visit this website:

Hope that helps.

Drink water. You have likely become dehydrated. There are also drinks that replenish the salts that you lose when you sweat. An orange is a wonderful replenisher of both the liquid and the salts.
