I've done research on active prayer or "spell casting". Many witches use a number of things to aide them in casting basic spells. Is it necessary to use tools such as an athame, herbs, candles, various natural objects, etc to cast spells? I would think that so long as your INTENT is there the tools are JUST THAT_tools or aides used to focus your energy. Fellow witches: what tools do you use (if any) when casting basic spells?

Please, if you don't believe in or follow the path I follow, keep your comments to yourself. This question is geared towards my brothers and sisters who are witches and regularly cast spells.

A magic wand of course. Didn't you take spellcasting 101?

Herbs, candles, athame, statues, flowers, plants; all depending on the spell. Of course, my pentagram and my circle. Presently, I do not cast spells but I do still believe they work. I just have fallen out of religion lately, as life has taken over. I really have got to get back into it!

I misread the question I think, so i will just add to it.
Tools are just that, tools. You do not have to have them to do a spell. They do help to bring your energy out, and also to summon up the Diety's energy. It helps me focus on what I am doing.

As you've said, they are for the most part simply tools, so if you don't need the tools then they don't matter. However, some objects will and do have power instilled in them that we or others give them, so these ones aren't just tools but actual objects of power necessary to carry out the spell/enchantment.

Additional: And please don't say "witches", but rather say "Wiccans" (this is actually more correct). And don't attempt to practice any magicks of personal gain or malicious intentent, nor any magicks at all without a good foundation in the art of Wicca.

I use tools and props to get in the right frame of mind. Incense, candles, athame, charms, runes, etc.

But then, I'm a rare witch. All I'm doing is using symbolism, positive psychological re-inforcement, mental focus and altered states of consciousness to make internal changes and seek awareness. I'm not claiming any special or supernatural abilities. My magic is entirely natural and based on the power of suggestion.

Items and such like that are supposed to focusing agents; the spell itself is powered by you. You can cast a spell just as effectively with no tools as you can with them. I don't use many tools at all; mostly my spells (when I bother with formally doing one) are just the intentions of the spell written down on paper.

You don't need anything, really. Many (including myself) can concentrate on what actions you would be doing if you were physically performing the spell, and that can be enough. Of course it's much easier to use tools, but there are times and places where it'd be impossible.

A few candles, crystals, essential oils, a pentagram etc. The basic idea behind it is that you have something to represent each element i.e. candles represent fire; they can represent colour and light too. red/pink candles are for love/romance etc. A pentagram is used for protection so make sure you have one somewhere.

The best I can figure, is that the tools help to distract your conscious mind so that your unconscious mind can do all the work. It may be possible to cast spells without using the tools, but your conscious mind will probably sabotage your efforts.

Candles, coloured ribbons, earthenware cups or saucers, in otherwords, just ordinary house hold articles you would find in your own home. It also helps if you can craft a few personal items with your own two hands, i.e. robes, wands, etc. The sky is really the limit as well as your own imagination. Just make it personal so that it will be your very own.

If you dont know how to cast a basic spell then you aren't a witch, you might be a witch believer but that's about as far as you can get.

Sorry to burst your bubble.
