Your faculty advisor should have already discussed this with you.

Your advisor is much better suited to answering this question, given that he/she has access to your transcripts, and should be cognizant of your academic progress. He/she will tell you exactly how to gain admission into the (PhD) program.

If you don't have a faculty advisor, then speak with the dean of the college (of structural engineering) (or his/her office assistant/secretary) and have the dean assign an advisor.

The dean's office can also answer your specific question about the PhD program.

The Graduate School catalog of each university spells out admission requirements in detail. You need a strong recommendation from the school from which you received your Master's. The school where I graduated required a "Counseling Exam" to determine your academic strengths and weaknesses and to guide your course of studies. It would not do to fail that exam, because it influences the faculty concerning your potential.

As a general rule, you must take a certain number of courses beyond your Master's degree. Their function is less to provide course credit than to prepare you for the PhD qualifying exam, which is both written and oral, long and difficult, and requires both problem solving skills and knowledge. On the eve of your examination you will probably know more about more things than at any subsequent time in your life.

Your department may require you to have specific qualifications, such as a Minor in mathematics or demonstarted proficiency in specified languages.

Once the examination is over, you will become a "PhD candidate," with the expectation that you will write a Doctoral Dissertation based upon advanced, original research. This research will be guided by a designated faculty member, but when you finish your dissertation, you will know more about your narrow area than the professor. The Dissertation must be approved by your advisor, your dissertation committee, and some administrative folks who worry about format and footnotes. When I worked on mine, it was necessary to complete it in five years, or one had to take the qualifying exam again.

There is an oral defense of your dissertation before your dissertation committee and any other faculty member who is interested in your topic.

The single most important person besides yourself is the thesis advisor, and he or she will decide when your research is over and you are ready to write your dissertation. Choose that person with great care!
