Well first off you may have to do a lot of searching to find a rescue that will allow you to a keep a dog outside. Since pretty much all pure breed rescues wont adopt out to people who plan on keeping the dog outside first place you should go is the local pet shelters. Take your entire family there and meet all the dogs, the dog you are describing is nearly every dog on earth. By meeting the dogs first you may find a sweet dog of no particular breed that you like. If you do want a particular fill out an application at the local animal shelters and specifically tell them to call you when they get that certain breed in. For you I suggest a Standard Poodle they are excellent with children very playful, highly trainable, very intelligent and not overly energetic. They are known as the clowns of the dog world and very loveable. They do however recquire a lot of grooming. They need to be brushed once a week at least, and clipped and bathed like once to twice a month. They however are not ideal dogs to be kept outside. I honestly dont think any dog should be kept outside.

I've owned many dogs in my life, mainly Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas don't eat all that much, and are a very good family dog. They are very friendly, and not too playful. The only thing is that, I would not leave your dog outside all of the time. I am POSITIVE that dogs feel much more loved when they are treated like the rest of the family.
I would feed your dog Pedigree, small breed if you get a Chihuahua, and only feed it wet food every other day, at the most unless he/she is a puppy. A Chihuahua will reach about a foot in height, and should weigh no more than 10 pounds when full grown. They come in a variety of colors, such as black, brown, blue, tan, tricolored, and many, many others.
I wish you luck adopting your new dog!!!
Hope I helped,
DoodlePup07
P.S. If I were you, I would NOT get a puppy with your child, puppies are very fragile, and can also hurt young children unintentionally.

If you're going to make the dog LIVE outside, then I would recommend a stuffed one.
Dogs live for their families companionship and have the need to be with their people.
Adopting a dog is supposed to be beneficial to both the dog and the family. The arrangement you're offering isn't all that great.
Really, what's the sense if it's just going to left in the yard 24/7???

I have a golden retriever and a border collie mix. They are both great with children. I would really recommend a golden retriever. Ours is energetic and fun to play with, but not too energetic. She's really kind of lazy, but I know lots of golden's who are not as lazy as she is. Our border collie is great too, but any working dog is going to require more energy on your part. They really need to have something to do and they will get into trouble if they are bored.

I agree...dogs should NEVER be left outside only. If you are concerned about your house, train him or her to stay in a certain area or not to jump of the furniture. If you aren't going to cater to the needs of a pet, you are better off not getting one. It isn't fair to them when there is probably another family out there who is willing to give it a soft bed inside a comfy home.

A pit bull !!!!!! I have 4 dogs, a chihuahua,a german shep., a pit bull and chi/jack russell mix. The pit bull is the most loving and super sweet with my 17 month old daughter. She sets on him and everything if he gets tired of it he just moves.
Don't give in to the media and people who have never owned a pit bull that bash them. They are the best pets. No matter what dog you get don't throw it and the backyard and not socialize it that only breeds aggression.

I grew up with a golden retreiver...they are wonderful dogs. I think the only drawback would be that they can be very hyperactive puppies, from what I've seen.
I've heard bulldogs are wonderful with children also. (not to be confused with pitbulls)

Don't leave a dog tied up in the back yard. It will get mean and feel neglected.
Dogs can be a part of the family, INSIDE.
