Some of the secretions from our eyelids are oily. The bacteria that live on the lids will metabolize that oil. Guess what they make?

Soap.

This soapy residue does feel like soap. It stings, causes you to tear up, seems worse when you try and rub your eye...

Wash your eyelids with water. You can use a Q-tip to clean the lashes and lash bases. Some people suggest baby shampoo and water on a little gauze pad or q-tip. Don't use cotton as the fibrils get loose and stick to the lashes, get in the eye, etc.

The cleaning, if done nightly for a week or so should work. When it comes back, just do the cleaning thing again for a few days....

Probably just dry eyes. Were you reading or on the computer when it happened? try artificial tears, any brand twice a day if this continues to happen
