The Bible was written by prophets, yet people have a hard time believing that there are still prophets that can receive messages that are not evil. I'm wondering how this works. God just all of a sudden stopped giving messages to people after the Bible was written? He just stopped making people that can hear? Are only old messages worthy of hearing? I believe that we can still have that type of communication, why is that difficult for a Christian to understand when they live by what prophets have written? I believe only God knows the future, but we are able to, "Do these things and many more." And the gift of prophesy in the Bible is the one that we should all want the most according to the Bible.

From the dictionary:
Main Entry: proph·et

2 : one gifted with more than ordinary spiritual and moral insight; especially : an inspired poet
3 : one who foretells future events : PREDICTOR
4 : an effective or leading spokesman for a cause, doctrine, or group
5 Christian Science a : a spiritual seer b : disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth
I don't consider, "old" useless, some of my favorite people are old, most of my beliefs are old. But, God still makes people and the new one's are just as valuable. So, as I see it, being that it states in our Bible: 1 Corinthians 14:1
1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
That was from the NIV

Great Question!
My humble feeling is that most Western Religions teach their followers to pray by SPEAKING to God. While prayer should be more in the form of LISTENING to God.
Early Christian sects, such as Gnostic Christians, prior to Constantine's Council of Niacea, where all mystic Christian Sects were considered heretics and their teachings where destroyed, believed in prayer as a type of meditation, similar in respects to many eastern religions.
With modern religious followers only taught to SPEAK to God through prayer, and not to LISTEN to God, how can we expect any prophetic wisdom in today's selfish world?

There is a difference between biblical prophets and psychics. The bible gives explicit instructions on how to determine if a prophet is a true prophet of God or (the only alternative) a prophet not of God and, therefore, evil
1) A true prophet of God *never* makes a false prediction, not even once
2) A true prophet of God *never* makes the *slightest* attempt to sway people from the worship of God, and *never* suggests that they worship other gods
3) A true prophet of God must give credit to God for the gift of prophecy, and *never* claims association with other gods
Deuteronomy 13, 18
Psychics, generally, claim to have special mental "abilities" rather than miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit. They generally do not claim knowledge revealed by God or the Holy Spirit but rather revealed by their "abilities". They often have to perform rituals or "readings" which are expressly forbidden by the bible (astrology, mediums, etc.) Psychics, in general, do not meet the biblical qualifications of a prophet - which is likely why the term psychic is used by them much more often than prophet.

Indeed you have a zeal, but not according to accurate knowledge.
The word 'prophet' simply means spokesman.
God turned to spokesmen in the past because the Bible was not complete.
Once it was complete, He no longer turned to spokesmen, the Bible said it all.
According to Revelation 1:1, it takes us right up to and including 'The Lord's Day'.
Your use of the term "old" messages equates old with useless.
You would not have that point of view regarding cheese or wine.
Mankind faces similar troubles today as it did a few centuries back.
If God's advice was good then, its good now.

I have yet to see a psychic that claimed to be getting a message from God. Generaly they claim to get their "power" from spirits or of there own ability, which goes against the teaching of the Bible.
Also, I have yet to hear about a psychic winning the lottery or have any predictions other then vague "cold-readings".
The Bible, on the other hand, has precise predictions that have been proven correct time and time again.

Sciences such as mathamatics, biology, chemistry, physics are lower truths. the highest truth is God. Sciences were meant to benifit man thus elevating us to a higher truth and giving glory to God in that truth
