I just got married in June and we picked "endless love" by Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross. My husband loves old motown (Luther) and I love more modern hip/rock/pop (Mariah) I thought it was a great choice.
There are so many great oldies to play at your wedding. I love disco, it seems to be the best choice for all ages. EVERYONE danced to the disco hits. I loved:
Boogie shoes, EWF, KC & the Sunshine Band, etc. Any disco will get the crowd going.
Also good slow songs for your first dance are:
Atlantic Star-Always (oldie but goody)
Stand by me-BB King
At last-Etta James
Basically, I think you should listen to the words (ex type in wedding songs) and see what suits you best.
Hope this helps:)
Good luck with the planning!

I'm a metal/rock gal myself.
For a first dance song - - check out Alice Cooper "You and Me". Yeah, its Alice, but its a really sweet song! If I ever get hitched that'll be my first dance song!
As for songs at the reception, EVERYBODY loves AC/DC "You shook me all night long" - - it actually gets people onto a dance floor.
From there, look at your interests and find ones that have made it to the top 40 - - Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Eagles.
You can get some rockin' tunes without offending any of your guests!

Talk to your DJ, he will be able to learn what you like and don't like for music and also learn your personalities and your relationship so he could recommend some good songs for a spotlight dance as well as build a playlist for the reception for you to look over and approve

I sing in a classic rock cover band, so this is right up my alley. Couple of quick ideas: Sea of Love (the Honeydrippers covered this a while back...great song). All Of Me (the old Billie Holiday version)
e-mail me if you want some more ideas.

My dad and I danced to "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw. Other suggestions I have are: Butterfly Kisses I Loved Her First I would also have her ask her father if there is a song that reminds him of his daughter.

I'm really fond of "Your Everything" by Keith Urban. It's not a very well-known song, but it's absolutely beautiful as a first dance song.
