My great grandfather fought in some of the biggest battles of WWII. I am sort of a history buff so I think it would be very interesting to see things like where he was, what he did, if he received any commendations and more general information like that.

I'm sure there is. Contact the military branch he served in. I'm sure that they have a process to do this research. They may give you information you use online to research. There are many veteran organizations as well.

Most of the military record will only be released to next of kin, meaning its release is limited to his son or daughter directly, only. Not to grandchildren.

You may have to get your mom or dad involved in the process.
