I don't think with their current economic structure they will be able to develop into a superpower again. Though they have seen increased revenue from the selling of arms and technology to the Iranians and Chinese. A country needs a strong financial and economical foundation in order to build military might, this is lacking especially when you take into account the current dilemmas faced by the average citizen of Russia. The Russians have also alienated themselves from Europe and their Western allies, without healthy ties to these two groups they will find it harder to sustain their growth and expansion.

No, that is not what Putin is all about. The Russians figured out the "empire" concept is just plain dumb. Hope our government soon comes to the same conclusion. Take care of the homeland and making life better for the people is more important than empire and trying to police the whole damn world. Hopefully, this Bush administration will convince everybody that we can not afford to continue playing the "empire" and world police role anymore. The domestic situation is in shambles and the focus must change quickly. Putin knows that and Bush never got it. By the way, have you been reading how well the Russian economy is doing these days? Russians love what Putin is doing. He seems to actually give a shxt about the people. Note: The U.S. Congress approval ratings are dropping below 23% and the ratings for the U.S. President are in the teens. Americans are outraged over their government. Yet, the vast majority of Russians are increasingly please with their government. Putin seems to be doing the right thing. In the U.S. things are not so good. The debt, foreclosures, war, waste, sicko health care system and job situation could usher in another great depression. The recessission is undeniable and the central bank (The Fed) is taking desperate measures to keep this runaway train on the tracks. Putin, meanwhile, is steadily working to improve the lives of long-suffering Russian citizens. All we get is a vague promise for "change." OMG!

THey do not have the MONEY. wHEN they were a military power, the people were starving and living 20 to a room. I wouldn't call this a "Superpower" just a bunch of vodka drunk power freaks who used money to build missiles to make up for the lack of assets elsewhere.

Russia requires continued high energy prices in order for that to happen. It has already nationalized a lot of the oil production and that money can be used for military improvements. As long as oil stays high, Russia can make some money.

Well, technically they still are, just not on the scale of the US. Haven't been for 20 years. They have to get their domestic house in order and that hasn't been the case since about 1973.

It only benefits the U.S. for Russia to have a strong military. Europe, once again, will be forced to pick sides. Perhaps Canada as well.

Currently, I dont think so in a conventional sense. In a nuclear sense, they already are. I think they can become one again, but they have a lot of building to do. It will depend on if their economy can handle the build up. Thats what gave out on them last time.
