It comes out of the ground every thirteen years. The only thing on it's mind is mating. And it is like a beetle. If you are riding your bike down the street and it comes flying and hits you, it'll leave a bruise. What is this called?

Cicada. There are several different kinds which make their appearance at different times, some are 7 years, some are 13, 17, etc. Completely harmless, unless your are creeped out by large bugs covering your trees.

Periodical cicadas are insects that spend most of their lives burrowed underground. They emerge once every 13 or 17 years to reproduce and die.

We live in KY & they were much worse north of us. They are called Cicada's, Catydid's, Locust. They make a very annoying noise sounds like a mini chainsaw. They only stay around a few weeks.
