Is there any possible outcome that couldn't be explained this way, though? Even the most horrible events like losing a child or having a leg cut off or developing psychosis could be rationalized by saying that "God allowed this so that I could learn lessons and grow spiritually." Would an all powerful, all knowing, all good teacher really teach in this manner? If any possible event can be seen as a good lesson, doesn't that make any possible event good?

No, I've been in many situations that are just part of life that people try to attribute to god talking to them, for example my relatives were seeking guidance as to whether god was telling them to stop watching TV because their TV had stopped working..... Oh, I forgot to mention that the TV was second hand and was around 20 years old. This rather puts things in perspective for me.

I learned long ago that "hinting" or sending indirect messages to my kids rarely works, so when I want them to learn something I communicate directly with them in an unquestionable form.

Yes I have been in a situation, and God allows you to go through things but he will never you more than you are able to handle.

It's called being in a state of Grace, when you're forgiven when there is no real reason for (God's) forgiveness. You know you screwed up, and that there's probably going to be some hell to pay, but it never comes. Are you off the hook?
Nope.
He knows, and you know, and it is up to you the count the Grace you've been granted as one of your blessings. That is to say, thank God for His grace and Mercy.

Peace!

if you watch someone get murdered and do nothing (not even calling the police) then YOU share in the responsibility of it.

similarly, anything good or bad that you believe god "allows" is really the same as god causing it (since he/she/it is god) and is therefore directly responsible....for everything.

can't have it both ways

Yes.Many times.I believe that everything that happens to us, especially to the people who have surrendered their lives to God, is part of God's perfect plan. We may see those things negatively at times. But if you look at it in God's perspective, you will see that it's always for the best. On the other hand, you can't always do this because some things can't be fathomed by us, humans, and are only understandable by God's infinite wisdom. And in times like that you have to trust in Him. He said in the Bible, "For I have plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a future full of hope."

OF COURSE! God will allow a lot of things to jar you back to where you should be - - and I believe he does do it for a reason. I've found in my life time sometimes HE'LL get my attention by giving me subtle signs, other times HE puts up a billboard sign -- I've seen it all my life how he manuvers to get our attention so we can grow, be better people. So yes, by all means, you're right.

certainly. I know exactly what you mean. And lots fo others will think that you mean that God let something bad happen to you...but in all reality we all make our own descisions...it's just that sometimes our storms last a little longer because he wants to shape and mold us into who he wants us to be. But in the midst of that he can give us peace. But also very important to remember that God's delays aren't God's denials.

I don't think God allows things to happen. I think that we are in this world and good and bad things are going to happen to us. We can ask for God's help and guidance in order to deal with whatever happens.
