I don't have kids, but as a guy who's sort of into artistic skating, I'd encourage my kids to pick quads over inlines. Of course, I'd probably take them to the rink several times, allowing them to get a feel for both inlines and quads before letting them choose for themselves what they want to skate in.

Acutally, I'm 21 and like my quads better than my blades. I'm pretty sure quads are "in style" (if such a thing is possible) and are cooler than blades because they're "retro" (good lord, the skates of my childhood are "retro" now).
So, I would say quads before blades.

My dd has blades. Sometimes she forgets them and has to use the quads at the rink. Its actually easier for her to skate on blades though. she also has Heelys.
My 2.5 y.o. has those baby skates that are inline in the front with side by side wheels in the back.

HECK YES! My 8 y/o has quads and inlines. He spends more time on his quads because he likes to be different from his friends.
