Okay....here it goes:
Matthew 22:38-40 This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
As Christians, we should be showing the love of Christ at all times.....regardless of what is being thrown at us.
I too, am guilty of not showing the love of Christ when my answers are seriously being challenged by others. My flesh has a tendancy of getting in the way....and always looking for the last word. In fact, my mouth is pretty guilty of that as well (just ask my wife).

Hey Eds,
Wow, I have sat here in front of my computer for about an hour now. I have composed two lengthy answers to your question and then deleted both of them.
I am not at all proficient concerning the Scriptures of the Christian/Catholic Faiths.
I enjoy learning about all types of theology and incorporate traditions from many 'Religions' into my personal Spiritual habits and such.
.
I do not participate in any organized Religion, too many rules. I do however have a wonderful relationship with Deity. I believe personal Spirituality is where its at. At least for me.
All I know for sure in life is that one must be Kind, Honorable, Responsible and Love as much as you can. I think these attributes are common within many schools of thought.

Here is one I like.
Galatians 5:16-26
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[a] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders,[b] drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Dear Eds,
What a great question!
Since I was out all afternoon (extra long walk) and I'm about to head to Bible study (we are talking about Grace) I'll just have to quickly say that I definitely agree with the excellent answers that Primoa1970, Laurie448, Human baby and Maybeleine already gave you.
I agree with Primo that it isn't always easy but I have some concern about Alleninthehills' answer:
... To Love God with all our hearts minds and souls, and to love our Neighbor as ourselves. but since many have ruled out the first part, there certainly is not reason to follow the second.
When it comes right down to it we are responsible for our own behavior. It makes no difference if others have ruled out loving God ... That is all the more reason for us to follow the second part to let the Light of the world shine through us.
I'll ponder this further and return tomorrow.
For His glory,
JOYfilled

Matthew 5: 43-48
You have heard that it was said, "you should love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.
But I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you
in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
For if you love those who love you, what reward have you. Do not the taxgatherers do the same?
And if you shall greet your brothers only, what do you more than others. Do not even the gentiles do the same?
therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly father is perfect.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is the golden rule

ohhhhhh, but my flesh wanted to run from this question........I know the attack will come from both sides !!!!! I have my Bible sitting right here on my desk and I have not opened it yet !!! I read this question many hours ago, but did not want to answer to fastly, I wanted to read, study, pray and meditate on it.... This question is one of the most important questions, besides the obvious, that a Christian can ask or answer...... *Sigh*......I put off even thinking about this question all day, unitl...... I was driving home from the grocery store, and this question just popped into my head, I began to think of different verses, I do NOT know many verses word for word, but I can remember the basics of a lot... anyway, I guess I was praying, in spirit , wondering what verse could possibly be the right one ?? I thought of about all the same ones that are already here, and I heard a voice, soft as a morning breeze...... * What about my word?*...... I just kept driving...... *sigh*, I did not know what those words were supposed to mean........ after a few hours of letting my spirit do the talking I realize this..... It was the Holy Spirit telling me there is a WHOLE book about this, not just a few verses, and to choose just one or two, would but up more stumbling blocks than are already out there.....I will try to explain...... When we meet people, each one is an individual with individual problems, situations, trials and tribulations....... and we have got to learn to see them as such...... There is a fine line between compromise and stepping over the line ..... When we face an abused woman, we do not start shaking our finger and telling her she is a sinner, we take her in our arms, and QUIETLY give her our strength........ When we meet the man who abused her, it is our appointment given by God to bring his wrong into the light, not by pointing the finger and doing the *going to hell* speach, but with the same love as with the woman he abused....even though we may turn him into the cival law, which is our appointment also, it is done with a heavy heart, NOT because we feel sorry for him, not at all, but because we love him as we should, and we know that he will have a heavy burden to carry , but we know that justice has to be done............. these are just 2 examples of the differences we face in life....... the bottom line is this..... We are accused by many, that we pick and choose verses out of the Bible to explain away, fit our lives, fit this or fit that, and in part that is a truth, for we do, not for satans pleasure but for Gods' glory........... being that each day, person, situation brings something different into our lives, yes we must choose the verse that best fits it, and says what God wants to say !!!!!!
Each verse is a member of the Bible and makes it a whole........ just as an arm, leg, heart, soul, mind, eye, is a member of our body, but also makes it whole........ *sigh*............. go in peace.......... God bless

Matthew 22: 34-40 (specifically verse 39)
[34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together.
[35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him.
[36] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"
[37] And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
[38] This is the great and first commandment.
[39] And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[40] On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."

This CAN be accomplished if we walk after the spirit and not the flesh.
Mat 5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Mat 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Mat 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have [thy] cloke also.
Mat 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Mat 5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Mat 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Mat 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Mat 5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
Mat 5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?
Mat 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
MooOOO!

James 1:27-states we are to keep ourselves ,as christians, unspotted from the world...
Romans 12:10 states we are to have brotherly love one for another
Hebrews 13:1 Let brotherly love continue
2 Peter 1:5-9 And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity;
For if these things be IN you and ABOUND, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
BUT he that lacketh these things is Blind and cannot see afar off and hath forgotten the he was purged from his old sins.
