to Europeans are the illegal invaders. Do you think there is a reasonable compromise or are we doomed to have this debate forever (and ever and ever)? Would a fair but objective point system be a potential answer? Do you have a better way that avoids both blanket amnesty and blanket deportation?

Why should we, I do not believe in mass deportation, but giving any type of status to the illegals will only encourage more to come. If we dry up the business that hire them that would be a first step in solving this problem

The ones using those statements are ones trying to justify illegal immigration today. There were no law when the first Europeans came regarding immigration. So their comments are rather silly and mute.
On the issue of illegal immigration today with laws it is different story but some of the fact are still lies.
To deport illegals is not a expensive many would like you to believe. "Operation W e t Back in the 80's took two years and about a few hundred thousand dollars.

Today it would cost a few million, but the best solution is if they can't work or live they will go home. Some also could be deported.
One thing we should not do is go down the road picking and choosing who should stay or go if they entered illegally.

What ever we do we have to send a real strong message that we are going to enforce our immigration laws, "if " we still believe in sovereignty of our nation with a rule of law.
That is the big unknown question.

Since you are looking for a compromise, and, many of the above posters have not put forth any compromise, merely stated Build a fence! I think a reasonable compromise would be this. Undocumented should be allowed temporary stay while we 'Sort through" them. Anyone who has committed a crime while here is sent back. Those that are allowed to stay can work but are ineligible for public assistance. They need to file taxes, and, if they commit a crime, they get the boot also. They should be required to pay a fine for illegal entry. None of this will matter though until there is something done about the border.

When the following steps are completed then we can talk about a limited amnesty for those illegals who have been in the country for 5 or more years. Included in the limited amnesty (after they pass a thorough background check) would be college graduates, those who work in agriculture, those with special skills that we need, and those who our willing to join are military.

a) Complete building the proposed fence along the US/Mexican border; this is essential.
b) Pass H.R. 1940, the Birthright Citizenship Act of 2007, which would end the process of granting automatic birthright citizenship to the babies born in the United States to illegal aliens.
c) Make it a felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of 60 days in prison to be in the US illegally.
d) Keep the National Guard on border patrol duty and let them interdict intruders.
e) New Border Patrol agents must be trained before amnesty is given.
f) Reduce chain immigration.
g) Stops providing social services to those who are in this country illegally.
h) Triple the number of ICE agents.
i) Mexico must be charged for the cost of the incarceration of its citizens in the U.S.
j) End the practice of dual citizenship. You are an American, or you are not!
k) English must be made the official language of the U.S. government.
l) Many more U.S. police officers must be trained in how to process illegal aliens by ICE, in the 278 (g) program.
m) End the practice of cities giving sanctuary to illegal aliens by reducing federal government funding to those cities, and by arresting the mayors. Charge them with aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

What I saw here:
-Anti-immigrants want first, build the fence, before legalize those workers who are currently in the US.
Yes right, I agree but:
-The fence CAN'T be built because there are not LEGAL workers to make it. One company was fined for hiring illegals to build the fence?, soldiers working as welders?
-The differences of languages since the Babel tower, still affect us.

Any change in our immigration policy we make won't change the fact that the illegals we have now broke the law in the first place.

Nothing can be done until the border is secured anyway, as anyone who doesn't qualify would just cross illegally and put us right back at square one.

Simple yet dehumanizing way would be to put tracing chips in all caught illegals and if they are caught again sterilize them. If they apply and come in legally have the chips removed. Hmm why stop there lets put chips in all parolees especially sex offenders. Also any city that is a sanctuary city will have all state and government funding suspended.

Attrition through enforcement. Go after the employers and illegals will self-deport. I'm willing to give but the amnesty people won't budge.
