The true history of the pickle is somewhat of a mystery. Although some believe it dates back to India 4030 years ago. The pickle has been mentioned in the Bible by Jesus and in the Old Testament books Numbers and Isaiah. Napoleon valued its health benefits for his army. George Washington had a collection of 476 different kinds of pickles. Basically there are two types of pickles. Sour and sweet.
There are many kinds of sour pickles but a certain type of sweet was called the bread and butter pickle after a Pennsylvania Dutch farmers wife who called them that for the first time.

I believe bread & butter pickles are not sour & more sweet. They probably tasted better on a sandwich alone than the other sour 'dill hamburger type' pickles. The bread & butter pickles is not just the cucumber but the addition of onions &/or pepper(& spices). Hope this helps !!

Don't know - perhaps the link will help.
As they are also known as sweet and sour pickles, maybe a reference to the savory bread and sweet butter. Just a guess.
