My boyfriend is turning 28. His dad just got diagnosed with cancer and is in the hospital. My bf has been sitting by his dad's bedside since. He really isn't thinking about his b-day, but I want to at least have a cupcake or something there, in the hospital with his dad present. What, if anything should I give him as a gift? He is also my best friend, not just a boyfriend.

Wow, that's tough. Maybe something they enjoy together like a nice chess or checker set that would be nice coffee table piece later...or a book of inspiring stories, "chicken soup" sort of deal...or maybe just a really funny pic of him and his dad in a nice frame, to remember happier times and help them both smile.

Good luck

I'd like to suggest something different - a book or two that he can read to his dad, or that they can share together. One is called "Tuesdays With Morrie" and the other is called "Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten". The first one is an easy ready that gently helps us understand what's important in life. The second is comical but also points out what's really important. If he's close enough to his dad to be sitting with him a lot in the hospital, they will enjoy sharing these books.

Conspire with his dad(if he is able) or his mom to steal him away for a bit to go to dinner or a movie. If his dad has just gotten diagnosed with cancer, then this is just the beginning and your b/f is going to be strong for the battle. That and I imagine his dad could use a break too. I've had major illness's and frankly, visitors and family is the last thing I wanted all the time.

Buy a small paper photo book from the craft store. Fill it with pictures of your boyfriend and his dad, you and him, pictures from when he was a boy...leave room to add pictures though:) I think something personal like that would be very good. I love your cupcake idea too:)

Blessings on your boyfriend's father and on you for caring so much that you want to make the day special!

My heart goes out to your boyfriend and I hope modern medicine can do something for his dad.

Gift idea: DVD's for watching with his dad, some that are classics they both like or brand new releases you think they'd both enjoy. The escape factor is much appreciated at such a time.

How about you make a picture album of him and father. Can you get ahold of pictures of him and his dad from his childhood? Maybe you could ask his dad to write a few memories in the album for his birthday.

Please convey my hugs to your bf and his father.
