As far as the booze - Martini is classically Gin with dry vermouth served straight up in a chilled glass.

Margs are made with Tequila, triple sec, lime juice and possibly (depending on your taste) a little simple syrup or a sour mix to take some of the edge off.

You may have seen a freshly shaken Margarita served "straight up" in a glass with a salted rim and therefore confused this cocktail with a Martini. Traditionally the margartita was served "straight up" - like a martini without ice or God forbid in a "frozen" slushy manner. I, however prefer my margs "on the rocks."

Unfortunatley - everything that is served "up" in a martini like glass is given the martini moniker these days - what a shame.

A traditional martini is a cocktail made of gin or vodka and dry vermouth. However, many restaurants have their own 'martini' menu, which may or may not have vermouth, and have other ingredients, which should technically be called cocktails, but are served in the martini glasses.

A Margarita is a cocktail made with tequila, an orange-flavored liqueur (generally Triple Sec) and lemon or lime juice (most often lime), often served with salt encrusted on the rim of the glass.

There are many different twists on a martini, and flavors that you can get by varying the ingredients... however, generally the only twists on a margarita are whether you get it frozen or straight, and with/without salt.

An all purpose cocktail shaker should work just fine for any mixed drink you plan on making. You can get them at almost any store that sells home-goods - Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. for $10-$20. Serious martini drinkers know that a proper martini is always stirred, not shaken.

Lots.

Martini is Gin and Vermouth
Margarita is Tequila, triple sec and sour.

All they really have in common is the first three letters of their name.

Big difference.
Martini is gin (or vodka) and dry vermouth, served straight up or on the rocks.
Margarita is tequila, triple sec, sweet and sour, and lime juice, served blended with ice or on the rocks.

martinis are made with gin or vodka, served chilled "up" or over ice; margaritas use tequila and sweet & sour mix, and are served frozen or over ice.
