JAKARTA (Reuters) - A plan to carry out virginity tests on female high school students in a district in Indonesia's West Java province has been dropped after a public outcry, media reports said.
The head of Indramayu district, Irianto Syafiuddin, is reported to have made the proposal for virginity tests after a video showing two high school students having sex circulated via mobile phones.
"Because many people oppose it, we cancelled (the plan)," Syafiuddin was quoted as saying by online news service Detik.com.
Syafiuddin could not immediately be contacted, but according to media reports he will look for an alternative way to prevent students from engaging in pre-marital sex.
Students, parents and activists viewed the planned virginity tests on thousands of high school students in the district as a violation of human rights, the Jakarta Post said.
"We can't accept this idea. It's unfair as the porn video was just an isolated case," a female student, Gita, was quoted as saying by the Post.
Many in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, place high value on virginity, although pre-marital sex is not uncommon among the younger generation.

As pretty much everyone has already pointed out, there is no accurate test now and there certainly wasn't a couple of thousand years ago. When I read the question I thought it was going to be a Biblical one. There is much in the Bible that amuses me, but some that horrifies me. One of the most horrifying parts is imagining being a young girl who has seen your mother, father, grandparents and brothers killed by soldiers with swords and spears. Then those soldiers grab you and perform an ignorant test to see if you are a virgin. If they think you are not they kill you. If they think you are they take you to be their property. Which, you would have to wonder, is worse? And what sort of morality still accepts this as good?
(Numbers 31:17-18) - "Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. 18"But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves."

It just goes to show that some people think more things are important in life then teaching your kids the right way and allowing them to make their own decisions.
This "test" would be humiliating to most girls, and would do nothing but cause uproar and lots of problems.
As others have stated, there is no way to tell for sure. It used to be thought that if they have a hymen, they are virgins, but that isn't the case with all girls. Some don't have one at all, some get ruptured while doing normal activities, or from an accident of some kind. These girls that don't have one, or for some reason had theirs ruptured could possibly be killed for the offense. I don't think that's the way to treat someone for something like this. Since the "test" could be flawed, that isn't a correct assumption at all.
This guy needs to be educated in what can really be. It's just ignorant to think this way. I'm glad there was so much uproar over it, and it got shot down. Those poor girls!!! And what a double standard!!! The girls have to be virgins, but the boys don't matter. What a rip!!!

I am sure a gynecologist could perform such a test. What is scary is that someone would suggest it in the first place. That man should be removed from his job. It is the duty of school officials in this country to protect end educate our children. Their morals are the responsibility of their parents and church.

It involves checking for the presence or absence of a hymen, and I imagine there is no lack of physician-volunteers for this onerous duty.Supposedly Lady Diana passed this test prior to marrying Prince Charles.

How can they do that? Why, they check to see if the woman still has her "cherry"... hymen. If the hymen is broken they won't consider her a virgin.
Ever notice that those who constantly try to control the sex lives of others are normally very uptight people? Could it be, because they aren't getting any?

It won't be pretty.
That entire idea is terrible, anyway. I'm glad it got shot down.
Besides, the way of testing for virginity that I'm thinking of, that they probably would be using, doesn't even work.
