First let me say that being underwhelmed is not the same as not having anything to do, or being caught up in everything. It's not being lazy. It's more about being under-utilized and not having enough responsibility.

So have you heard of the concept, or have experience with it? How have you worked through it?

I first learned of this concept at church, so I thought I'd post it here.

Yeah...it's when you are not challenged enough (in my case it occured in school, but it applies to not being fully challenged at work, or, if you have some kind of problems, in relationships).

Personally, I don't think it is a good idea to be "underwhelmed". I wouldn't want to be a Christian like the ones spoken about in Revelation-those who were Laodiceans. They were warm, not cold and definitely not hot. I'd rather be hot, not warm or a fence-sitter or pew warmer. Everyone has at least one gift and those gifts must be used for the benefit of everyone including the person themselves. If they're not using the gift(s) God has given them and are instead being warm, pew-warmers, underwhelmed, it can't work. I think it is more known as complacent or apathetic, something that is a downfall for everyone involved. People aren't happy if they're underwhelmed, either. I would rather I and everyone else have a balance and use our gifts and be responsible.

I was underwhelmed by the debate on ABC between Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort and a couple of atheists.

Ray and Kirk claimed that they were going to offer proof that god exist without using the bible and without using personal experience.

They proceeded to base their arguments on:
The bible.
Argument from incredulity.
Personal experience.

Even being an atheist I found their argument embarrassing. It was definitely underwhelming.

I'm constantly underwhelmed by the lack of knowledge displayed by some Christians, and others as well, on R&S.

Young people often feel this way. With experience comes lots of responsibility on the job. At home if you'll take all the jobs and responsibilities most people will give it to you. It is a lot like being mediocre.

I think that underwhelment comes only when someone has an expectation of being overwhelmed that falls way short of the mark.
