I get that the point of reincarnation is to eventually attain nirvana/moksha/heaven (wotever u wanna call it). But how did the souls get caught in the karmic cycle in the first place? is there something equivalent to the First Sin for reincarnation?

It depends on the culture and religion. There a TON of versions of it.

God made all the spirits ignorant. Not evil, but ignorant, and as a child learns through many experiences until grows into a mature adult, so we all have to grow into a mature or more enlightened spirit. For that reason, we need several lives, because only one would not be enough. Every existence is a step forward and no existence is in vain, no matter how miserable it was. When the spirit achieves the nirvana, or the highest level of spirituality, he/she doesn't have to be born again, although he/she will continue on working in the spiritual world to help fellow human beings still struggling for their perfection. Our goal is to be close to what Jesus taught us.

Peace!

When a spirit is developed (at some point-it can be at any time), then it starts to live life and reincarnate as many times as is necessary until it reaches enlightenment. The soul happens when the mind has reached a point of self-awareness.
My thought being a (kind of) evolution of the spirit into a soul into an enlightened soul.
Christians, prove me wrong! Lol

Because everything returns to its source, friend. Karma is not bad, it is compelled by a law which would evolve all of creation from its alpha of unknowing to its omega of completion. The problem is often with peoples perceptions of what is bad and what is God. Karma as in its principle is that everything, without fail, returns to its source. Souls being embodiments of the alpha and omega is attempting to utilize the outer law in order to gain inner harmony out of the divisions of their being that came about intentionally for the means of development so that each part of ones being is full and whole. This division can be seen as death, which more of less was the true fall, it can be said that the laws brought this about, just like the mitosis of a cell is brought about. Although this is a Pauline quote, I'm going to use it anyways..

"For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now" (Rom 8:19-22 NKJ).

So karma isn't bad because it is movement and having movement within the laws is more valuable then having none at all, which would be complacency. There is a higher design to why things occur which is truly beyond our concepts of right and wrong, or political correctness. Also this question has a lot to it, but somethings can't be said without getting a little to lengthly. But everything returns to its source and the karma which is a law is the means of our souls working towards their completion. The lack of experiential knowledge started it.

Steven Levine (sp?) the author of "Who Dies" (an amazing book), says that after working with hundreds of dieing people and 'near death' experiences, he has drawn some interesting conclusions.

"All we take with us, at death, is our capacity to love and our self image".

I liked the sound of this and it does tie into reincarnation. It could be that the bundle of 'energy' that "I" call "me" records (like a CD!) these deeper, more meaningful, emotions...love and self image.

Who knows, there could be a recycling a re-animation of "me" flavored with these attributes. Interesting and fun to think about. =D

One more 'thought'. We carry "karma" in our thought patterns and replay them until we break the patterns. Experience, openness, education, insight, can break up the patterns. Karma has a 'mystical' aura to it. It is just replayed memory habits.

According to eastern Philosophies, in the beginning the souls were pure, but wanted to experience being in a physical dimension, that you could say was the first sin, getting involved with a material dimension.

Many millions of years ago souls incarnated to planet earth to experience the darkness and what God asked them to experience in terms of the great fall!
There were what seemed endless incarnations for these souls to enjoy or otherwise to learn the business of having a material body.
Then the Lord Jesus Christ was born as the fall guy to expiate our sins and lead us back to God again into the light!
It is as simple as that and we are all in the process right now of heading back home wherever that might be!

Blessings in the name of our Lord.

Sort of...the spirits involved in the cycle broke off of the collective spirit that they return to for any variety of reasons (in Buddhism, they are still part of this spirit). It could be equivalent to the First Sin (except it wouldn't be due to physical actions).

Hi!

Reincarnation exists, as in that after you die, your 'physical' remains will be re-used, reincarnated into something else, everything is re-used in nature.

The atoms, that make up everything in the universe are building blocks, after everything dies, it is 'moulded' into something else.

The soul is the mind, it should not be confused as something that lives on after death and that it is somehow re-used.

The mind cannot exist, without the brain, which will degrade!

It is only the physical, that is re-used!!

How I personally think it is is that; We were sent to earth to create---we wanted to create like God --or who ever he is to you--did so we needed physical bodies--because we are our souls--and we can't learn EVERYTHING we needed to in just one life time so we come back each and everytime and in the midst of us coming back each time--in a physical body we made mistakes and we had to come back until we resolved them and make the world a happy place again--
