1 Corinthians 11:3- 15
This has to do with order. A woman ought to have"Power on her head beause of the angels". The angels of course are shocked by anything that is out of order. Now, the head of the woman is the man. Again, it is an issue of order. Woman is not a second class- or inferior- person, but she is special, and very important in God's plan .
A woman ought to have a covering when in prayer just as her hair should be longer while a man's hair should be shorter
Now, verse 16 tells us that it's not something to quarrel over, however, I guarantee that following this advice from Paul will greatly enhance the prayer results

it is to show obedience to the Lord's directive that man control the household. That does not mean he is a tyrant, nor that all his ideas go. A good captain listens to what his sergeant says and thinks about it, and is no more or less an important person, but in the end it is the captains decision about what to do.
It was not a directive for the times. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. If it were for the times, He would have said, "Right now you have to do this, later you will not have to." The same argument is used with homosexuality.
In all things where society conflicts with the Bible, you have to ask which one is more important.

This is a BIG debate, especially among Apostolic peeps.
Basically, the scripture surrounding this whole subject is this...
1st Corinthians 11:15 "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering." and Verses 1-16.
Basically, scripturally (yet many argue) a women's hair is a God given covering. There is no need for another covering aside from her "long" hair. Bible term for "long" is "uncut", "unshorn".
For a man, cut/shorn short hair is the proper way to honor God, or Christ as his covering. (1st Corinthians 11:14 "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?")
If it's following scripture, it shouldn't be how we "feel" about it, it's what does scripture say about it.
Also, it's not "just" certain denominations that adhere to this bible teaching. Pentecostal, Apostolic, Mennonite, Amish, and many, many others keep this bible truth, so watch out for those bitter peeps that automatically trash groups because they keep this truth alive! =)

have a look at verse 13 13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? In that context it seems like woman should cover their hair in public. Meaning Paul probably tried to say something like: let your women cover their hair, because thats whats normal in this culture. This way, people from outside the church had less things to stumble over when getting to know the church. At least, that is how I interpret that scripture. One verse that helps me with this interpretation: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. God wants us to be free from everything. So there is nothing we have to wear. Yet if it helps other people to get to know Christ...why not? Today, their is no cultural pressure to wear certain things (in most countries) so it isn't necesarry anymore.

God rules from the top down you can say a theocratic system, Adam was made first them the woman so when a woman has her hair or head covered she is showing subjection to that God's system. I know with women's liberation it has been allowed in churches and condoned for a woman not to go Thur all that but we can choose what do we want to follow man-made doctrines or God's.

Nuns cover their heads. Very religious women often wear hats or scarves to cover themselves when they go to church.
"Although the practice of Hijab in Christianity is now largely abandoned, images depicting the Virgin Mary still show a woman in hijab as a means of portraying her high status. That is the same status all Muslim women are given by the hijab. "

1 Corinthians 11:5-6
5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
It says to shave off a woman's hair if she doesn't cover up during prayer. That means that the "covering" is not the hair itself, but rather a cloth or a "hijab" to go over the hair.

This may refer to the hair.......
But in a more literal sense, this was specific to the first century Christians.
Edit:
Sorry, I am a brother in Christ....not a sister. But I hope my answer helps a little
