Is sumo practiced only by people who want to be pro Sumo fighters or do some people practice Sumo just for the sport of it with no intention of being pro? Is Sumo as popular as Judo? Is Sumo in the decline in Japan or is it the same as it always has been?

There is age-group and college sumo. Few college sumo wrestlers join the pro ranks though. Most prospective pros drop out of school and join a pro stable when they are 15 or 16. There are a lot more partcipants in judo, but sumo is more popular than judo as a spectator sport. Sumo isn't as popular as it once was. When there are wrestlers active who really catch the public's attention it gets more popular-it's a personality driven sport.

Which is bigger in America, Baseball or Swimming? It's like Sumo to anything else in Japan. (Besides Japanese Baseball which is almost just as big.)
Sumo is HUGE in Japan!!! Many outside fighters will show up for a day or two, first contacting the sensei and at his approval are able to observe the training.
In order to train as a Sumo it requires everyday of your life and a lot of intense training/eating. You have to be accepted into the Sumo house and from their do nothing else, but Sumo.
The top sumo wrestle's over the past little while have been Geijin (Foreigners) One from the States and the other Phillipines.
Like many sports, even baseball in America it is possible that thethrill for sumo is declining.
