カラオケ (karaoke) is the concatenation of kara (empty) and oke (short for orchestra). "Empty orchestra" means music performance (such as singing) without a live orchestra.

In Karaoke you sing by listening to recorded music and sing out the words (usually shown on a TV screen to help the singer).

It comes from 2 words:
kara = empty
oke, short for okesta = orchestra
So the meaning is "empty orchestra".
