Measure how long the matchstick is in inches or centimers. Then use a tape measure in the standard units to get the dimension. Divide the answers by "matchsticks per inch" to get the dimension in matchstick units.
Then again if you like to do things the hard way, lay out a dozen math sticks on a paper and use that as a 12-matchstick ruler. Use that bigger ruler to get the room size. It is faster than going one matchstick at a time.

If the wall is a standard appartment wall, floor to ceiling should be 2.5m (at least in France)
stand away from the wall holding the match as far as you can however the objective is to get a perfect alignment of the match with the full hight of the wall.
once you get the right distance, look how many match lengths you need to cover the length of the wall and multiply this by 5 and divide by 2.

Hold it in front of your eye and parallel to the side of the room you want to measure. Move it until the ends of the matchstick are in line with the ends of the side of the room. Then the side of the room will be in the same proportion to the matchstick as the distance from your eye to the wall is to the similar distance to the matchstick.

Lay it by the corner of your wall so you know you are getting a straight line. push it to the end of one wall. Flip it over keeping the inner end held tight to the ground. Count 1. Continue to flip counting out loud every flip. I suggest using a mark every 10 or 25 flips or something like that.

Ask someone to measure it with a tape for you. OR pretend you are selling your house & get the estate agent out, they will measure it with anything just to get their commision.
