A 1-year-old won't "get" Christmas at all. He'll be excited about the lights on the tree and the pretty packages, but don't expect him to be excited about his presents. In fact, don't be shocked if he spends Christmas in meltdown mode. Less is definitely more. The reason everyone will tell you a 1-year-old will play more with the boxes than the toys is ... that a 1-year-old will play more with the boxes than the toys.
That said, do you have the basics? 1-year-olds will enjoy a good set of blocks, some vehicles, some little people or stuffed animals to pretend with, some balls, a bunch of board books, paper and crayons, simple puzzles, some simple instruments, some pretend foods or tools, and maybe a ride-on toy or small slide if you've got space. Skip all the beepy things that will drive you crazy. Don't try to get everything all in one day. He'll appreciate one or two small things every once in a while way more than fifteen presents in one morning.

I guess since they are too little to understand what is going on I have bougth to my 7 & 3 yrs old in the past and plan to do the same with my 9 month baby.. Buy clothes that will usuallu do during this time and on summer and only 2 toys that will call their attention appropriate for their age.. 1 stuff toy that will say my first Christmas .. I wrap all the presents and take them pictures with all the presents under the Christmas tree so they can have a memory from that time because they will not remember maybe what was going on.. For my 9 month old I am planning on buying maybe a musical table , a walker since soon she will be starting to walk , a stacker,a tune piano, or something fun that can be found in the infant section and that will be useful for her.. SO good luck finding anything for your little ones..Hope I help a little in your ideas to buy something for them !!! Best wishes:)

My first baby was a boy too :). I, like you, was and still am very very proud of him and all my children. We took him shopping with us in the toy department. Played around with the toys and saw what attracted him the most. We almost bought out the store! Any way Christmas day finally arrived. He opened all his presents from mom and dad, family and friends. A friend gave him a pull toy. He wasn't walking that well yet, but he could roll the toy on the floor and had a blast with it. It was his favorite toy for months and months . Heck... he was 3 years old and STILL pulled that same toy along behind him!

I'm a big fan of the Leap Frog brand of toys - they're educational as well as entertaining.
But whatever you decide to get don't go over board (even though you're tempted). At the age he'll be too overwhelmed and over stimulated with a ton of toys and no matter how much you buy there's always going to be that one toy that will be his favorite and the rest will sit there unused. Save your money for future purchases and just get him a few things -- because you know grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles will also make sure he has plenty of toys (and clothes).

Baby's First Blocks
Baby's First Blocks has 10 bright blocks that baby can drop into the open bucket or through the shape-sorting lid. Filling the bucket with blocks, dumping them out, and starting over is great for eye-hand coordination and other early skills. Then baby can move on to sorting and stacking, learning about identifying and matching shapes while having fun! There are 5 different shapes to help build early identification skills and a carry handle for take-along fun.
Dance Baby Dance! - Classical Stacker
Sparkly stars become cause for celebration as baby stacks them one by one. Dance Baby Dance - Classical Stacker features dancing lights and music that is sure to make baby smile! Plays five songs; three classical tunes and two children's favorites and the four colorful stars have interesting textures, too. Baby can grasp and stack the stars, developing fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Batting and rocking the stacker fosters gross motor skills. Colorful, twinkling stars and friendly faces offer visual stimulation. Music stimulates auditory skills. Feeling textured stars enhances tactile skills. Fosters problem-solving skills as baby figures out which star comes next. Helps baby learn to distinguish among colors and sizes.

Nothing from China!!! Books for a starter and easy toddler puzzles. Don't get things that are too advanced or he will get flustered and bored. They DO test those toys for a reason. Remember that at first he will be the MOST interested in the packaging and wrappings! Later he will dig whatever age appropriate toys you have bought him. Start him on Savings Bonds, too. Not a fun gift for a child to open but one he or she will greatly appreciate when they are ready to start out on their own or go to college!

The first xmas is more for you than for him. He won't remember it much.
Our daughter was almost a year old at christmastime, and she got clothes, tub toys, a pretty bath towel with fairies on it, and books, books and more books. She didn't understand anything about opening presents either, so it really doesn't matter.
I do remember that she became interested in larger stuffed animals at that time, so a nice big teddy bear would probably go over well.
We also invested less than a dollar in a 12 inch ball. It really impacted her life. It was one of the first words she ever said. "BALL".
My parents gave her a set of baby toothbrushes from the dollar store! Like I said...it doesn't really matter. We have money to spend on xmas, but little things mean a lot to babies.

He'll be more interested in tasting the wrapping paper than anything else. If he gets too much he'll just be overwhelmed. Keep it simple, like. . .
A box big enough to crawl inside. You may need to fit inside with him.
Little boys like trucks, cars, and tractors. John Deere makes toy versions of their equipment, some are even soft rubber and open into little books.
Go to www.oneshare.com and invest in a share of stock for him. They send you a certificate that's all framed and stuff, he'll grow up thinking it's normal to own part of Disney!

how about a nice ride on truck? a radio flyer wagon is great too! Other than that just toys that you normally wouldnt buy on a normal day. They sell mini ball pits for babies, which he would ahve a blast in, and what about those little pop up tents that look like a home? They have themed ones too. What about a mini workbench? or a mini kitchen? how about his own little table and chairs for snack time/play time. Or a train set. just do a few really large wonderful gifts that you normally would not buy then a few common gifts.

Congrats on your precious baby boy:) Speaking from experience as hard as it may be try to not over do his 1st Christmas. One year olds will be happy with a few toys, some books, & you could even get him his 1st ride-on toy. They have the cutest little firetrucks, etc...that have lights & make noises that they sit on & push around with their feet!! By his 2nd++ Christmas he'll be 'into' more things:)
