These are "formal" affairs. Dress as if you were going to a wedding, or funeral.

A smart dark cocktail dress would be superb, the hem length as current fashion dictates. If it's a Ball then it really can't be informal, so dress up rather than down. However if hubby is going in short sleeved floral shirt and long shorts, disregard my advice.

When i was in the Navy, and attended the Balls the women typically wore ball gowns. But if that is a bit too much for you, you can never go wrong with a nice black cocktail dress. They are classy, sexy and always stylish.

Since it is semi formal Ball, I would go with a long backless dress. It just looks a little more professional. But technically you can wear whatever you want.

I would ask one of your senior officer's or NCO's wives what the appropriate attire is. But a general rule of thumb is that "dress blues" is equivalent to a tuxedo, and class A's are equivalent to a business suit (sorry Army terminology). Adjust your dress accordingly.

My mother believes in classy....If you pick a dress that is backless make sure everything else is covered up...if you want to show leg, cover up everything else....sudle sexy is better then overly trashy.
