It's important because they messed up their lives for years and hope to get into heaven so they try desperately hard.
It means from the time they were 18-35 they did what they wanted and someone told them they'll go to hell... From 18-35 they killed enough brain cells became dumb enough to believe they could be saved.
From a churches POV they birth em, wed em, bury em, and it just isn't enough profit so now they birth em, wed em, save em, bury em.

Before I get slammed I would like to say I agree with many definitions of above contributors: I would add however that being born-again is not a once and for all process.
What Christian Unions in the UK and elsewhere never fully explain is why so many of their student leaders, so open and helpful, are the very people who 2-3 years later have "backslid" into non-belief or passiveness through challenging their faith or burn-out. And that is fine. But don't claim they never had it!

The phrase "born again" literally means "born from above." Nicodemus had a real need. He needed a change of his heart--a spiritual transformation. New birth, being born again, is an act of God whereby eternal life is imparted to the person who believes (2 Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1-4, 18). John 1:12,13 indicates that "born again" also carries the idea "to become children of God" through trust in the name of Jesus Christ.
The question logically comes, "Why does a person need to be born again?" The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:1 says, "And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins..." To the Romans in Romans 3:23, the Apostle wrote, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." So, a person needs to be born again in order to have their sins forgiven and have a relationship with God.
How does that come to be? Ephesians 2:8,9 states, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast." When one is "saved," he/she has been born again, spiritually renewed, and is now a child of God by right of new birth. Trusting in Jesus Christ, the One who paid the penalty of sin when He died on the cross, is what it means to be "born again" spiritually. "Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation..." (2 Corinthians 5:17a).

Jesus said "unless a man be born again he cannot enter the Kindom of Heaven." Being born again means being born spiritually. When we are born physically our spirit is dead due to sin that is passed on from our parents all the way back to Adam. The sin debt which we have must be paid to God. The penalty for sin is death. Jesus Christ paid that debt for us when He died on the cross. His resurrection shows that He has overcome the power of sin and death. We can be born again by repenting of our sins and by receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit when we believe God. The moment you believe that you are under the curse of sin and that you believe that Jesus Christ has broken this curse for you and you open your heart and trust in Him to save you from eternal damnation, then the Holy Spirit makes His home in you and your spirit is awaken. Hence the term " you are born again." I hope that answers your question.

w/o being born again according to acts 2:38, Jesus said in John 3:5, you CANNOT enter the kingdom of God.
most "christians" are not born again according to how Jesus taught & peter, paul & the rest of the apostles preached (book of acts).
most christians only "believe".
that's not enough according the Jesus.
scripture tells us the devil "believes"... is he saved? no.
why?? b/c he didn't obey the Gospel unto salvation (Rm. 1:16) ....
that is, Jesus':
- death = repentence
- burial = baptism through immersion in Jesus' Name (not "in the name of the name of the father, son, & holy spirit" as these are titles w/ no power to remit sin ... only Jesus' name can do that.)
- resurrection - receiving the infilling of the Holy Spirit w/ the evidence in speaking in other tongues as God's Spirit gives utterance (acts 2:4)
after you are born again, you are to live a holy life as God expects us to ...
He said ....
"be ye holy for I am holy".

If you are baptised/christened at birth for example. This was through no choice of your own. If you then grow-up and take Jesus into your life and make-up your own mind to believe - you are born-again. It is important because it is then ultimately YOUR choice and not that of your parents / guardians / others

I guess it means that they have found something which keeps them committed to a greater cause. They are happy that they are good citizens and if finding religion means that then so be it.
My view in general is that religion is bad for society, but if they like it then that's their prerogative.
Good on anybody who is happy with their lives, I do not need a religion to find that.
Nature makes me happy.
