I think that's basically it. It's a form of brainwashing that requires constant reinforcement or it begins to fade.

here is the biggest problem facing humans today, We are evolving beyond religion... the flow away form the churches are getting larger, but because of the way the churches worked it, killing every thing natural in their path... humans have a hard time understanding spirituality and its purpose.. the purpose of our spirit is to unify us with nature... in animals it's called an instinct.. without religion animals didn't lose that contact.. in humans it's called a conscience.. So when christians ask us how we could possibly be "good" without their god, it's because we've reclaimed what the church set out to destroy .. our conscience
