Does the Navy or Air Force ever accept people as officers who DON'T have a technical degree in sciences, engineering, math, etc.? I.E. with a degree like history, anthropology, political science, journalism, etc.?

Seems to me they wouldn't be in need of people with general BA type degrees. Anyone know if it's possible to become an officer if you don't have a technical background? Cheers.

If anybody has a real answer (unlike the useless first one by Sonali B) please let me know.

Sonali B, go back to living in your Mom's basement and being a big fat loser. What a worthless human being you are.

Yes, and no. the Navy and AF are very technical and as such prefer these types of degrees. Doesn't mean you won't ever get picked up for a slot though.

You may face an uphill battle, depending on what exactly your degree is in, what your GPA is, and what other things you bring tot he table, like experience and leadership roles.

You may find the best way to go about it is to enlist and then apply to OCS/OTS from within, but be prepared to have to do so more than once. The Navy, at least, uses different recruiters for Os and Es, so make sure you talk to BOTH when getting information.

My husband enlisted with a 4 year degree in Math and a 2.9 GPA. 4 years and 2 submissions later, he was picked up as an IWO in the Navy. Some of his fellow IWOs are Music majors and Business majors.

I would imagine that you can put in at any time, (although I am sorry to say I don't know for sure) Just know that the application process takes a LONG time, I have been going through the in's and out's of mine for months, and if I am selected it will total about a year waiting altogether. I am curious as to why you didn't apply right off the bat, I graduated from a state university with a 3.0 BS in Biology, and while my GPA might be low, my application is fairly competative. Don't give up, because I can tell you, I have been going through hell, the application is almost like your first test of character, because you have to prioritize it above everything else, and it really makes you appreciate what you are applying for. Good luck, I just made the OT01 board, so I will find out if I am accepted in about a month or two

I can answer the Air Force part of it. We have two seperate boards for OTS. The technical and non-technical. It is possible, but when you have a non-technical degree there are far fewer slots so the chance of getting chosen obviously is less. I say give it a try. I dont think there are any non-tech boards open as of right now, but call an officer recruiter and see.

Yes, they do. I have met art history majors, poly sci majors, business majors and so on that were officers. If you are near completion of your BA or just want the straight answer go speak with a real recruiter, not the yahoo answers vatiety. Good luck to ya.
