if the domestic violence was regarding the spanking, both parents could appear and charges would most likely be dropped
however
if the domestic violence was between husband and wife the courts are very reluctant to drop charges because most abused women that want charges dropped, are talked into it by the abuser, and abused again later !!

As several posters have already indicated above, once the wife called the police in on the matter it made what was a private matter into a public one and she no longer has the option of dropping the charges just because she wants to; it will be up to the DA's office whether or not the want to pursue the charges against the husband and what evidence they have to work with.
Husband needs to hire a good criminal law attorney to see if the charges could be reduced and the husband sentenced to an anger management course or dropped if there is insufficient evidence that any actual abuse occurred.
Husband and wife should also get into counseling; it is not a healthy relationship if for whatever reason the wife feels the need to call the police due to a problem with her husband.

Was the charge a battery on the wife, or the child? In most cases, dropping the charge is not an option because the state takes over the case and wont allow it. Opt for an attorney in this case.EDIT: from personal experience, if a woman files these charges against you, your guilty. You, yourself have to prove that the charges were filed from anger, or spite. If your wife has done this, and you didn't do it in the first place, you will live knowing that she could do it again. The police believe a woman over men every day, so your choice how to go from here.

I don't think it's up to her to drop the charges because she reported a crime against someone else, not herself (and even if it had been herself sometimes the police now go ahead and press charges even if the victim themselves decides not to). It's up to police and social services to decide. Frankly if it was worth reporting then it'll be worth prosecuting and if that's the case then they shouldn't have done it.
