"But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house."
(A). Why is this the case? (B). Can this happen even if the Christian is not a hypocrite and has lived clean for many years?

A. It was hard to the Jews accept Jesus as the Savior because they saw Him growing up, and it was easier to the people outside of His hometown to pay attention to His teachings.
B. Yes.

A person will not get respect from people who know him and think they are older and wiser. In the case of claiming to be a prophet, it will cause even more troubles. If he goes into another area, he will have a clean slate and be taken for what he says, not how he grew up.

In this country we had a prophet, Joseph Smith, who was driven out of his community and later martyred.

In here, Jesus has returned to his 'home town' of Nazareth. The people that heard him listended and were amazed. Jesus is merely saying that they should be carefull who they belive because every person-to somebody- is smart. False prophets are thought to be true in their own cities. Following his remark, he preformed miracles of healing people. Why? He's saying don't just listen to people because they sound smart, don't believe me because I sound smart (or 'have honor/respect'). Instead, watch me perform this miracle so that you can know that I am the true God, for only to the true God would the laws of nature submit to his authority.

I'm sorry I may not answer your questions, but at least, I hope, you have a better understanding of the concept.

Jealousy forbids the countrymen of a prophet to honor him. Base as this passion is, it is a very common one, and is not easily subdued, even by the best of men. In Nazareth Jesus was no more than the son of a carpenter, and the brother of a certain very common young men and girls, while abroad he was hailed as the prophet of Galilee, mighty in word and deed (Lu 24:19).

What this has to do with your last question is beyond me.

If you study Jesus's use of language as related to us through the Gospels, you can see that he frequently uses hyperbole as a rhetorical device. What I have always understood this to mean is that a prophet sometimes has to criticize the culture he/she is a part of, and that these truths can sometimes seem to be unpalatable.

Because the people that know someone for many years often see them as what they were as much as what they are. Christianity is about development and leaving behind the past.

That is My Life Verse! [ or should I say.... ONE OF THEM!]

Many.... will flock to hear.... A STRANGER.... and NOT Someone ... LOCAL!

As I travel.... I find that SO! While Preaching at Speakers Corner... in London... I FOUND.... that they WOULD RATHER... listen to someone... WITH A YANK ACCENT... rather than a Local!

"Familiarity - Breeds Contempt"... is the Saying!

Thanks, RR

It's like they said,"isn't this the carpenters son? His mother and father we know .His brothers and sisters we know .Where did he get all this knowledge?"
They were jealous.
