Here is what you need to do. First contact the hospital and reach a payment agreement, that says the hospital will give you a letter that the account is to be removed from your credit report totally upon the payment of the account. This is called vacating the account or reporting of the account as in collection or past due. Don't pay them unless they agree to do this as most of the time they will as they want the money and really don't care about your credit, but in order to get the money they will agree to eliminate the reporting, negative or other wise, altogether. Once, they give you the letter pay them off and within about thirty days it should fall off your report. If you pay it without this type of agreement it will show paid, but still relfect as being late, or past due, and that will remain on your report for seven years. Your scores will go up and eventually, it will not harm your credit at all, generally this takes about three to four years, but it will hurt your scores a little bit until it drops off totally. So, if you reach this agreement and get this letter and they don't drop it off the three credit reporting agencies, then you have the letter and can have it notorized as a true and correct copy of the original and send it to all three agencies and request that they take the necessary action to vacate it from your credit file, as the letter states. Hospitals and utility companies are pretty good in doing this. I wouldn't pay it until you get this type of letter, or l would just reopen the account and pay the minimum each month and show that you have reasssumed the debt, and if you pay timely, it then will become a good credit source and negate the former bad credit source. Hope it works out for you.

Some people take it off but others will just mark it as paid. You will have to stay on them though. They have 30 days from the time you pay it to update your credit report. Jennifer

It is supposed to be removed if you pay it off but mistakes like that are common so make sure you ask for a reciept or letter of acknowledgement that you have paid it off to keep for your own records.

Yes, negatives stay on your report for 7 years. If you pay it, it will show as paid which is much better than unpaid.
