It is not worrying enough that Russia has started its air patrols (using bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons), or that they are thought to have started sending submarines close to UK waters, but in one of the recent interceptions, they are flying planes with the red star again.

The red star was used by the USSR, Russia is meant to be different, a democracy instead of a dictatorship. Is this a worrying sign and are you concerned about these flights?

Russian Federation aircraft and tanks have been displaying the Red Star since 1999 after Russian military decided it was easier to identify then white, blue and red of the Russian tricolour flag. Additionally Russian submarines and other naval vessels have been sailing close to UK waters since the foundation of the Russian Federation, the same as US and UK submarines and naval vessels have been sailing close to Russian territorial waters for the same length of time. You say this is worrying, but I bet you do not say that US missile shield in Eastern Europe is worrying to Russians. Nor do you mention that when Russian forces were withdrawn from Germany in 1994 US and Britain kept large numbers of forces in Germany then bleat about peaceful intentions! You do not mention that USA is only nation in the world that has used nuclear weapons against an enemy and that UK has history of aggressive colonisation of third world countries. Perhaps you think of the behaviour of your 'peaceful freedom loving democracy' before you post messages like this about other countries

Russia has not "just recently" starting using the Red Star. The Red Star has always been the insignia of the Russian Air Force.

The Tu-95 Bear has not been a standard A tactical bomber for well over thirty years, its purpose is as a Reconnaisance aircraft. The purpose of these fly overs just as they were in the days prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 are still the same, the Russians are testing our reaction times to their incursions.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't be concerned about this return to 'Cold War' style behavior. We should be more worried about our old pal Putin buying up all the oil resources going into Europe, talk about putting your fate in the hands of somebody who can't be trusted.

Not at all worried if Russia were to launch what is left of their nuclear missiles then it would not use the ageing TU-95s which can easily be picked off before they left Russian airspace but Vladimir Putin is a problem he is ex KGB. and still yearns for Russia's imperial expansionist past but he does not have the means or the balls to threaten the west

The red star is still the symbol of Russian Air Forces.
It has nothing to do with the communism, democracy-shmockracy or whatever else.
It's just the same sort of a military symbol as David's star of Israel or French tri-color circles.

Since America and China are acting in a silent alliance, Russia basically has its back against the wall. Suddenly, its two main rivals are working together and expanding influence in Eastern Europe (Clinton + Bush's missile shield), Asia (China v Tibet), Africa (China v Sudan) and the Middle East (Bush v everyone).

Russia is desperate to find some claim to relevance outside of Chechnya. It needs to be in the news, it needs to win alliances through fear or at least have someone on its own level to compete with. Personally, I think Russia's best bet is to expand trade with Europe, maybe even work toward entry to the EU. I doubt Putin thinks he can scare his way in, but maybe he wants to be one of the major EU collaborators with France and Germany and he thinks showing strength would be the way to achieve it.

I have noticed that all of these aggressive Russian moves are aimed at Europe, and in a broader geo-political sense it almost looks like the anti-social kid trying to make friends on a playground full of bullies, by acting like a bully.

When I was in Russia, I flew on a plane that still had a communist flag on it's wing. They don't have the money to repaint everything. If you've ever been there you would see how run down alot of their buildings are equipment are.

dont look into what happened to much. putin is on his way out and just wants to throw some weight around. he ordered his bombers to fly long distances and he knew what would happen if it cam near british airspace. anyway those two euro fighters would of sent it home in a million pieces
